I hold Marriott Bonvoy status in part because of Amex Membership Rewards transfers — it is one of the few Indian credit card programmes with a direct and consistently available path to Marriott points. After years of routing spend through the Amex Gold and MRCC, my view is that MR points are genuinely useful when used for transfers, genuinely terrible when redeemed for merchandise or statement credit, and frequently misunderstood by people who assume the low per-point face value means the programme is weak.
This guide covers everything: the earn rates across all four main Indian Amex cards, every transfer partner, when the Marriott transfer makes sense, and the redemptions worth targeting.
Cards in this guide: Amex Platinum Charge · Amex Gold · Amex Membership Rewards (MRCC) · Amex SmartEarn
What are Amex Membership Rewards points?
Membership Rewards (MR) is American Express's global loyalty currency. In India, MR points are earned on Amex's four main credit cards (Platinum Charge, Gold, MRCC, SmartEarn) and can be:
- Transferred to airline or hotel programmes — the highest-value exit
- Redeemed on shop.amex.in — for Amazon, Flipkart, or statement credits
- Used for travel bookings via American Express Travel — at a fixed value
- Redeemed for merchandise, vouchers, or experiences — generally poor value; avoid
The MR programme's strength is its transfer flexibility — not the face value of points, which at ₹0.25–₹0.50 per point for direct redemptions looks unimpressive compared to a 2% cashback card. The value is unlocked in transfers.
Earn rates across Indian Amex cards
| Card | Annual fee | Earn rate (general) | Accelerated earn | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amex Platinum Charge | ₹66,000 + GST | 1 MR per ₹40 | 3x on overseas spends; 5x on ShopWise e-vouchers | Unlimited supplementaries; highest earn rate; ShopWise bonus capped at 25,000 points a month |
| Amex Gold Credit | ₹4,500 + GST | 1 MR per ₹50 | 5x on ShopWise e-vouchers | No fee waiver; ShopWise bonus capped at 25,000 points a month |
| Amex MRCC | ₹4,500 + GST | 1 MR per ₹50 | Bonus MR on milestone | Fee waiver on ₹1.5L+ spend; Gold upgrade path |
| Amex SmartEarn | ₹495 + GST, waived on ₹40,000 spend | 1 MR per ₹50 | 10x on Flipkart, Uber, BookMyShow (Amazon 5x) | Entry-level card |
How to read the earn rate: 1 MR per ₹50 = 0.02 MR per rupee. At a transfer value of ₹0.50 per MR, that is an effective 1% reward rate on most spends — not impressive for cashback-centric users, but the transfer value regularly exceeds ₹0.50 per MR for well-planned redemptions.
The Platinum Charge earns on a different scale — its base is 1 MR per ₹40 (0.025 MR per rupee, ~1.5% at ₹0.60 per MR), it steps up to 3x on overseas and foreign-currency spends (~4.5%), and e-vouchers bought through ShopWise earn 5x (~7.5%), with up to 20x on luxury brands through Rewards Xcelerator. (Amex closes the wider Reward Multiplier brand links on 30 September 2026; the ShopWise voucher rates, 5x on the Platinum and Gold and 3x on the Reserve and Platinum Travel, continue.) The ₹66,000 fee has no spend-based waiver, so the maths works only for very high-spending users — and even then the card is a lifestyle proposition (lounges, hotel status, vouchers) far more than a rewards one.
Transfer partners
Amex India Membership Rewards feed seven loyalty programmes: Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1, four airlines at 2:1 (KrisFlyer, British Airways and Qatar Avios, Cathay Asia Miles), and, since 18 August 2026, Virgin Atlantic at a better 5:4 and Hilton Honors at 2:3. Hilton was a diluting 10:9 until that date and we told you to avoid it; at 1,000 MR = 1,500 points it is worth a second look. You can see the exact live ratios, and what each exit is worth in rupees, in our points transfer explorer and what your points are worth tools — both read the same verified transfer graph, so the numbers here and there never drift apart.
Amex to Marriott Bonvoy transfer (2026)
Amex India Membership Rewards transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at a standard 1:1 ratio — 1 MR point = 1 Marriott Bonvoy point (100 MR = 100 Bonvoy). This is the single most useful exit for MR points from an Indian Amex card, and the ratio is confirmed on Amex India's own rewards portal.
| Partner | Standard ratio | Minimum transfer | Transfer time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott Bonvoy | 1:1 (1 MR = 1 Bonvoy point) | 1,000 MR | usually up to 48 hours | Best hotel transfer in India |
What about transfer bonuses? Amex India has occasionally run a Marriott transfer-bonus window — a 30% boost the one time it did — but these are rare, time-bound and never guaranteed. Plan around the standing 1:1; don't hold points waiting for a bonus that may not come. If one does appear, treat it as a windfall: time it against a specific redemption you are ready to book, and confirm the exact ratio and end date on the Amex India rewards portal before you transfer, because transfers are irreversible.
The practical mechanics: transfers post from your MR account to your Marriott Bonvoy account, generally within 48 hours, in a minimum block of 1,000 MR. At the standard 1:1, premium Marriott properties in India (JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, Le Méridien) can be booked on points at high-value rates.
I have used this transfer path for JW Marriott Mumbai and Westin properties in India — at the standard 1:1 the redemption value comfortably exceeds ₹0.50 per MR, and a transfer-bonus window, when one is live, widens that further.
Airline programmes
| Partner | Transfer ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer | 2:1 (2 MR = 1 mile) | The best-known Amex India airline partner; min 1,000 MR |
| British Airways Executive Club (Avios) | 2:1 (2 MR = 1 Avios) | Avios also spends on Qatar, Finnair, Iberia and Aer Lingus |
| Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Avios) | 2:1 (2 MR = 1 Avios) | Same shared Avios currency as British Airways |
| Cathay Asia Miles | 2:1 (2 MR = 1 mile) | oneworld premium-cabin awards |
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 5:4 (800 MR = 640 points), since 18 Aug 2026 | Best airline ratio Amex India offers; value lives in partner awards (ANA, Delta) |
Singapore KrisFlyer at 2:1 is the best-known Amex India airline transfer — 30,000 MR converts to 15,000 KrisFlyer miles, enough to seed a partner award. British Airways and Qatar both draw on the shared Avios currency, so MR points reach either at the same 2:1. Note that Air India's Maharaja Club is not an Amex partner — despite the common assumption, no Indian Amex card transfers to Air India; that route runs through a dozen other bank currencies instead. Axis EDGE Miles carries the best ratios (1:2 from Atlas, 1:4 from Olympus), and HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Kotak, RBL, YES, Federal, HSBC and IndusInd points all feed Maharaja Club at their own rates — our Air India Maharaja Club guide has the full list. Hilton Honors was Amex's one hotel misfire at 10:9, landing near ₹0.32 per MR, worse than a statement credit. On 18 August 2026 it moved to 2:3, and at our conservative ₹0.35 per Hilton point that is roughly ₹0.53 per MR, which clears the 50p voucher floor. Two cautions before you act on it. The whole verdict rests on that ₹0.35 estimate, and we do not yet know whether the new ratio is permanent or a limited-time transfer bonus, because Amex published no end date.
Because most airlines transfer at 2:1 (≈ ₹0.50 per MR), the better-value exits sit elsewhere: Virgin Atlantic at 5:4 (≈ ₹0.80 per MR) since 18 August 2026, and then the hotel route to Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1 (≈ ₹0.60 per MR). The same caution as Hilton applies to Virgin — Amex published no end date, so treat ₹0.80 as today's ceiling rather than a ratio you can plan years around. Where Amex MR earns its keep is the Platinum Charge's accelerators — 3x on overseas spends and 5x on ShopWise e-vouchers — but on general spend Amex MR earns at a modest base rate (1 MR per ₹50, or 1 MR per ₹40 on the Platinum Charge).
Partner lists change — check the current menu on the Amex India rewards portal (or our live transfer explorer) for your specific card before planning a transfer.
When the Marriott transfer makes sense
The Marriott Bonvoy programme in India has excellent coverage: JW Marriott, Westin, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Aloft, and Four Points properties exist in nearly every major city. For a frequent business traveller using Marriott properties, building Bonvoy points via Amex transfers is a practical strategy.
Example redemption — JW Marriott Mumbai, 1 night:
- Bonvoy points required: ~35,000 (depends on dates and dynamic pricing)
- MR points needed at the standard 1:1: 35,000 MR (fewer if a transfer-bonus window is live)
- Cash rate: ₹18,000–₹25,000 depending on season
- Effective value per MR: ₹18,000 ÷ 35,000 = ₹0.51/MR at floor; ₹25,000 ÷ 35,000 = ₹0.71/MR (higher again if you transferred during a bonus window)
At the standard 1:1, the Marriott transfer for a domestic aspirational night already clears statement-credit value (₹0.25/MR) comfortably — and a transfer-bonus window, when one runs, widens the gap further. Where the transfer wins most decisively is for international Marriott properties and peak-season bookings where cash rates are very high:
Example — Westin Paris or Marriott Maldives:
- Cash rate: ₹50,000–₹1,20,000 per night
- Points redemption: 35,000–60,000 Bonvoy points
- MR points cost at the standard 1:1: 35,000–60,000 MR (fewer if a bonus window is live)
- Effective value per MR: roughly ₹1.0–₹2.0/MR
For international luxury travel on Marriott properties, the Amex MR → Bonvoy path is genuinely among the best-value options available to Indian cardholders.
The SmartEarn accelerated earn on partners
SmartEarn's 10x on select partner merchants — Flipkart, Uber, BookMyShow, Ajio, Nykaa, Blinkit and Myntra, plus a separate 10x on EaseMyTrip and Zomato (Amazon earns only 5x, and Swiggy is not a partner) — is worth noting for budget travellers. At 10 MR per ₹50 on those merchants (= 0.20 MR per ₹1), and a transfer value of ₹0.50/MR, effective return is 10% on those categories — comparable to the best targeted cashback cards. The catch: these are category-specific and SmartEarn earns only 1 MR per ₹50 elsewhere.
SmartEarn was the entry point to Amex — MR at a ₹495 fee that waives once you put ₹40,000 a year through it, with an eye toward upgrading to MRCC or Gold once spend patterns grew. It is paused to new applicants, so this now describes the card you may already hold rather than a route in.
What NOT to do with MR points
Avoid these redemption exits:
- Statement credit: ₹0.25–₹0.30 per MR — far below transfer value for strategic users
- Shop.amex.in merchandise: rates are poor; equivalent to or worse than statement credit
- Amazon vouchers: typically ₹0.25/MR; better to keep the points for a transfer
- Speculative transfers: transferring points without a specific redemption target introduces programme-side expiry risk
The only time to use statement credit or low-value exits is if points are approaching an expiry risk and no transfer redemption is viable.
MRCC vs Gold vs Platinum: which card to hold
| Use case | Recommended card |
|---|---|
| Entry to Amex MR programme, low annual spend | SmartEarn (₹495, waived at ₹40,000 spend) |
| Growing portfolio, want Gold upgrade path | MRCC (₹4,500, upgrades to Gold) |
| Moderate-high spend, everyday earning with a portal accelerator | Amex Gold (₹4,500, 5x on ShopWise e-vouchers) |
| High-spend, Platinum lifestyle benefits | Amex Platinum Charge (₹66,000) |
One caveat before you plan around this table: Amex India is closed to new applicants — every card on it, not just the entry rungs. SmartEarn, MRCC and Gold have been paused since March 2025; the Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve, which had been the only remaining way in, closed again in August 2026. Amex calls the pause temporary and has published no reopening date. Existing cardholders are unaffected. Treat the ladder below as how the range works, not as three cards you can apply for this week.
The MRCC and Gold are the most practically useful for the largest number of cardholders — they earn MR and unlock the full transfer partner menu. Note the fee waiver asymmetry between them: MRCC's ₹4,500 waives at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend (half off between ₹90,000 and ₹1.5 lakh), while Gold's identical ₹4,500 has no spend-based waiver at all — it is a fixed cost you have to out-earn.
Combining Amex with hotel cards
Amex MR's strength is Marriott Bonvoy. If Accor ALL is your primary hotel programme, Amex does not transfer there — see the Accor ALL transfer guide for HSBC TravelOne, which is the Accor card.
A practical two-card hotel setup for Indian travellers who split between Marriott and Accor:
- Amex Gold / MRCC for Marriott and airline spend → Bonvoy transfers
- HSBC TravelOne for Accor travel → ALL transfers
