Best Lifetime Free Credit Cards in India 2026: No Annual Fee, Real Benefits

Lifetime-free credit cards in India have matured beyond basic options. IDFC FIRST Classic, IDFC WOW, and Scapia offer genuine rewards at zero annual cost — no fee waiver condition, no hidden charges. Plus Axis ACE — now closed to new applicants — a near-free fee-waiver card that still rewards active spenders who already hold it.

Lifetime-free credit cards are no longer the stripped-down, low-reward consolation prizes they were five years ago. In 2026, some of the best cashback rates in India come from zero-fee cards. This guide covers the best truly free credit cards — no annual fee, no waiver condition — and what each one is actually good for. For the current ranked shortlist that updates as fees and rates change, see our live lifetime-free credit cards page.

What "lifetime free" really means

A lifetime-free credit card has no annual fee ever. Not year one free and then ₹500 from year two. Not free if you spend ₹1L. Free always.

This contrasts with:

  • Fee waiver cards: Charge a fee that is reversed if you hit a spend threshold (e.g., HDFC Millennia waives ₹1,000 fee on ₹1L spend)
  • First-year free cards: No fee in year one; full annual fee applies from year two

When evaluating true cost, a fee waiver card at ₹1L threshold is functionally free for most active users — but a slow spending year will cost the fee. A lifetime-free card never does.

IDFC FIRST Classic Credit Card

IDFC FIRST Bank has built its reputation around lifetime-free cards with competitive rewards. The Classic is the entry point.

Reward structure:

  • 10 FIRST Reward Points per ₹200 on dining and travel spends (~1.25% at ₹0.25/point); international spends earn nothing from 26 October 2026
  • 3 FIRST Reward Points per ₹200 on other eligible spends (~0.375%), and 1 per ₹200 on utilities, insurance, FASTag and railway
  • The 10X is category-led: it applies to dining, travel and birthday spends (the old tier for spend above ₹20,000 a cycle was replaced on 18 June 2026, and international spends dropped out on 26 October 2026)
  • FIRST Rewards are worth ₹0.25 each

Key benefits:

  • Zero interest on EMI conversion for select transactions
  • No forex markup: IDFC removed it on all its cards in September 2026 (Key Fact Statement dated 15 Sep 2026), so paying abroad costs nothing extra, though from 26 October 2026 it earns no points there
  • Fuel surcharge waiver
  • Reward points expire 24 months after they are earned (revised 18 June 2026) — the old "no expiry" line no longer holds

Annual fee: Lifetime free — no condition

Annual percentage rate (APR): IDFC FIRST cards are known for relatively lower interest rates compared to many Indian issuers — relevant if you revolve a balance occasionally.

Ideal for: First-time credit card applicants, people building their credit history, and those who want a free card with no annual-fee pressure. The base 3 points per ₹200 is modest, but dining and travel spends earn 10X.

IDFC FIRST WOW Credit Card

WOW is IDFC FIRST's secured card — issued against a fixed deposit (FD). This makes it accessible to people who cannot qualify for unsecured cards: those with no credit history, new graduates, or individuals rebuilding their credit.

Key benefits:

  • Zero forex markup — the most valuable feature; rare on any card, extraordinary on a free secured card
  • FD-backed: deposit ₹20,000–₹10,00,000 as collateral; credit limit is typically 100% of FD
  • 4 reward points per ₹200 (~0.5%) on online and offline spends; utilities and insurance earn less

Annual fee: Lifetime free

The zero forex advantage: For a new cardholder who also travels internationally, WOW's zero markup means you can use this as your international travel card while building credit history — a combination few secured cards outside IDFC's own FD-backed range offer.

Ideal for: People with no credit history who need to build a CIBIL score and also travel internationally. The FD requirement is a collateral, not a sunk cost — the FD earns interest while securing your credit line.

Axis ACE Credit Card (near-free: fee waived on spend)

Axis ACE is not lifetime-free — it carries a ₹499 annual fee that is waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spend. We include it here because for any active spender who clears that threshold it is effectively free, and its rewards outclass most genuinely-LTF cards. Just go in clear-eyed: a slow spending year costs the ₹499.

Earn rates:

  • 5% on bill payments / recharges via Google Pay (5%/4% categories share a ₹500/cycle cap)
  • 4% on Swiggy, Zomato, Ola (shares that ₹500/cycle cap)
  • 1.5% on all other spends (uncapped)

Annual fee: ₹499 + GST, waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spend.

ACE's uncapped 1.5% base is strong for a low-fee card. Every transaction not covered by the accelerated buckets earns 1.5% — groceries, offline stores, healthcare. The floor is genuinely useful for moderate spenders who do not want to manage multiple category cards, but it is a floor with holes: Axis excludes fuel, rent, wallet loads, government payments, insurance and education from the ACE's rewards, so those earn nothing rather than 1.5%.

Ideal for: Anyone who pays utilities via Google Pay, will clear ₹2 lakh of annual spend to waive the fee, and wants a strong low-fee cashback card. But the ACE is now closed to new applicants — Axis has quietly stopped sourcing it, so this profile is for readers who already hold one. If you're choosing a new card, the lifetime-free IDFC FIRST Classic above is the closest still-open everyday earner.

Scapia Federal Credit Card

Scapia is a travel-focused lifetime-free card built on Federal Bank's infrastructure, with zero forex markup as a standout feature.

Key benefits:

  • Zero forex markup on international transactions
  • Scapia coins earned on transactions (travel redemption focus)
  • No annual fee, no joining fee
  • App-first experience with travel deal integrations

Annual fee: Lifetime free

Best use: International travel purchases — hotel bookings, airline tickets, foreign currency transactions — where zero forex markup makes every transaction cheaper than a standard Indian card.

Limitation: Rewards are Scapia coins with travel-specific redemption rather than straightforward cashback. For straightforward returns, SBI Cashback or Axis ACE outperform.

Ideal for: Young travellers, digital nomads, and remote workers who want a free card for international transactions and travel bookings.

The upgrade path

Lifetime-free cards are a starting point, not a ceiling. Use the free card to:

  1. Build 18–24 months of clean credit history
  2. Demonstrate spend behaviour (₹15,000–₹30,000/month)
  3. Qualify for fee cards that offer higher returns (IDFC Millennia, Axis Magnus at lower tiers)

A good free card used consistently for two years positions you for mid-tier cards — which, at the right spend level, are fee-waived and offer materially higher rewards.

I have spent over a decade on Indian credit cards, mostly for the points and miles. I am a software engineer by profession, I hold and use the cards I write about, and I redeem through airline and hotel transfer partners: Avios, KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Air India Maharaja Club, Accor ALL, Marriott Bonvoy and Taj. What I write about is what a card is actually worth after the fine print, the caps and exclusions that decide the real return, and the changes issuers make quietly. No paid placements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a lifetime free card and a fee waiver card?
A lifetime-free card charges no annual fee ever — there is no waiver condition, no minimum spend, no annual review. A fee waiver card charges an annual fee but reverses it if you spend above a threshold. Lifetime-free cards are genuinely free regardless of how much you spend. Fee waiver cards are conditionally free — if you miss the threshold, you pay the fee.
Are lifetime free credit cards worth it or are the rewards too low?
Lifetime-free cards have improved significantly. IDFC FIRST Classic offers 10X reward points on dining and travel at zero fee. Axis ACE (1.5% general / 5% Google Pay bills) is not lifetime-free — it charges ₹499 waived at ₹2 lakh of spend — and is now closed to new applicants, so it only matters to readers who already hold one. The rewards are not as rich as premium fee cards, but the net value calculation favours free cards at moderate spend levels.
Does Scapia Federal give zero forex markup?
Yes — Scapia is a lifetime-free credit card with zero forex markup on international transactions. It earns Scapia coins on transactions that can be redeemed for travel. For budget international travellers who want a free card with zero markup, Scapia is a standout option.
What are the income eligibility requirements for lifetime free cards?
Lifetime-free entry cards like IDFC FIRST Classic are designed for wider eligibility — IDFC asks for an annual income of ₹3 lakh (about ₹25,000 a month) for the Classic, and many issuers publish no income figure for their entry cards at all. IDFC WOW is a secured card requiring a fixed deposit, with no income requirement. Scapia targets working professionals with a salary account.
Can I upgrade a lifetime free card to a paid premium card later?
Yes — most issuers offer upgrade paths. IDFC FIRST Classic can upgrade to Millennia or Select. Axis ACE holders can be offered Magnus or Select upgrades based on spend history. A well-used lifetime-free card builds the relationship and credit history that enables premium card upgrades without starting fresh.
