American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card

Amex MRCC (Membership Rewards Credit Card) is American Express's entry card in India — 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹50 on most spends, though fuel, insurance and utilities no longer earn. Its real strength is redemption: points transfer to airline and hotel partners (Marriott 1:1, most airlines 2:1, and Virgin Atlantic at a better 5:4 since 18 August 2026) and punch well above their weight when used through the rewards catalogue. Two monthly milestones reward regular use — 1,000 bonus points for four transactions of ₹1,500+, and another 1,000 for ₹20,000 of spend in the same month. The welcome benefit is 4,000 bonus points on ₹15,000 spend within 90 days, and a one-time 5,000-point bonus lands on first-year renewal, on payment of the renewal fee (credited within 90 days of renewal).

The MRCC is the gateway drug to the Amex ecosystem — and we mean that as a compliment. It earns a flat 1 MR per ₹50 (~1% at ₹0.50/point) with no category accelerators; the real return comes from the two monthly milestone bonuses (up to ~24,000 points a year) and redeeming points via transfer partners. The ₹4,500 fee needs steady spend and disciplined redemption to justify. If you are curious about miles and points, this is where to start.

If you hold this card: If you already hold the MRCC, nothing changes — your card, Membership Rewards points and both monthly milestone bonuses continue exactly as before.

American Express is not accepting new card applications in India. Its own card pages carry the notice: “We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations.” The pause began in March 2025; the Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve reopened in September 2025 but closed again in August 2026, so the whole American Express India line-up is now shut to new applicants.

There is no open application route for any American Express card in India right now — the Platinum Reserve (₹10,000) and the Platinum Card / Charge (₹66,000), which had been the two ways in, closed again in August 2026. Amex calls the pause temporary but has given no reopening date, so the only thing to do is wait.

Last checked 5 September 2026 against the issuer's own page. We re-check this and will lift the notice as soon as the card is open to new applicants again.

Pros & cons

✓ Pros

  • Membership Rewards transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1 and to KrisFlyer, British Airways, Qatar and Asia Miles at 2:1 — with Virgin Atlantic better still at 5:4 since 18 August 2026, though Amex published no end date for it
  • Two monthly milestone bonuses (1,000 pts on 4×₹1,500 txns + 1,000 pts on ₹20,000 spend) — up to ~24,000 points a year for steady spenders

  • Amex customer service is consistently rated the best among Indian credit card issuers

✕ Cons

  • Amex acceptance is lower than Visa/Mastercard at small merchants, petrol pumps, and government counters
  • The ₹4,500 fee waives only at ₹1.5L annual spend (50% at ₹90k) — light spenders pay it in full
  • Best value requires understanding of Amex transfer partners — not for users who want simple cashback
  • Fuel earns no MR points and attracts a convenience fee — 0% at HPCL under ₹5,000, 1% at HPCL ₹5,000+ and at BPCL/IOCL, 2.5% at other fuel stations

The concern

Amex acceptance in India remains patchy — petrol pumps, small merchants, and government payments routinely decline it, so it cannot be your only card.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amex accepting new applications for the MRCC in India?
No. American Express paused new applications for this card in India from March 2025, and as of August 2026 the pause covers its entire India line-up — the Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve, which had reopened in September 2025, closed to new applicants again. Amex's own card pages carry the notice, and it describes the pause as temporary. Existing cardholders are unaffected — check americanexpress.com/in for the latest.
Which airlines accept MR points?
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, British Airways Executive Club, Qatar Privilege Club and Cathay Asia Miles at 2:1, plus Virgin Atlantic Flying Club at 5:4 (800 MR = 640 points) since 18 August 2026 — the best airline ratio Amex India offers. Amex published no end date for the Virgin rate, so treat it as today's rate rather than a permanent ratio. In effective-return terms this card's best everyday earn is 1% on everyday spends — percentages here are the real return after converting points at their card-specific value, not the headline points-per-₹100. Figures as of October 2026.
What is the welcome bonus worth?
The welcome benefit is 4,000 Membership Rewards points on ₹15,000 of spend within 90 days — worth about ₹2,000 at ₹0.50/point. (Separately, 18,000 points redeems for a Taj/Amazon voucher of ₹6,000–₹9,000 — a redemption tier, not the welcome.). The welcome benefit was last published at about ₹2,000 against a joining fee of ₹1,180 all-in (incl. GST) — a first-year net of roughly ₹820 in your favour before any spend-based rewards. New applications are paused, so it is not on offer today. Figures as of October 2026.
Why does Amex get declined at some places?
Amex has lower merchant acceptance in India than Visa/Mastercard. Petrol pumps, small merchants, and government payments routinely do not accept Amex. Always carry a backup card.
What is the monthly spend bonus?
Two monthly milestones — 1,000 bonus MR points for four transactions of ₹1,500 or more, and another 1,000 for ₹20,000 of total spend in the same calendar month (enrollment-based). Encourages consistent usage over big-ticket spending.
Is there a renewal bonus on the MRCC?
Yes — a one-time 5,000 Membership Rewards points bonus on first-year card renewal, on payment of the renewal annual fee, credited within 90 days of renewal. It applies once, and is separate from the 4,000-point welcome bonus.
How has the American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card changed over time?
Our dated Value Timeline for the American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card (on this page) records 6 changes since 2010: 2 devaluations, 0 improvements, and the rest neutral changes such as launches or restructures. It also lists changes scheduled to take effect later, the next being Points paused on a card still overdue at its next statement (15 November 2026).
Has the American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card been devalued recently?
Not in the last 24 months on our record. The last recorded devaluation was 18K/24K Gold Collection shopping vouchers cut ₹1,000 each (1 March 2024) — from 18K = ₹7,000 · 24K = ₹9,000 to 18K = ₹6,000 · 24K = ₹8,000. The full dated history is in the Value Timeline on this page.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club for Indian Cardholders 2026: Tiers, Partners and What Virgin Points Buy

Virgin Atlantic flies double-daily to Delhi and Mumbai and 13 times a week to Bengaluru, and since 18 August 2026 American Express India moves Membership Rewards into Flying Club at 5:4, the best airline ratio on the Amex India menu. This guide covers the programme itself: Virgin Points (which never expire), the Red/Silver/Gold ladder at 400 and 1,000 Tier Points, all 25 airline partners including IndiGo, Household pooling across 10 people, and the hotel back doors that open the programme to Axis, HDFC, HSBC, SBI and Kotak holders. It also covers what most programme guides get wrong: Virgin prices its own seats dynamically, so a Delhi–London award ranges from 6,000 points to 76,000 depending on the date.

Amex Membership Rewards and HSBC TravelOne are the two Indian currencies that feed Marriott Bonvoy directly, both at 1:1, with HDFC reward points a distant third at 2:1 (Infinia/Diners Black) or 3:1 (Regalia Gold). Amex has occasionally run a Marriott transfer bonus, but it is rare and never guaranteed — the standing 1:1 is the value. This guide covers every transfer route, how the Amex transfer works, why you cannot move Bonvoy to Accor, and when a hotel transfer beats keeping the points.

Amex to Virgin Atlantic at 5:4: The Best Exit Membership Rewards Has in India

On 18 August 2026 American Express India moved Membership Rewards to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club from 2:1 to 5:4, so 800 MR now becomes 640 Virgin Points instead of 400. At our baseline valuations that puts Virgin at about ₹0.80 per MR against ₹0.60 for Marriott Bonvoy and ₹0.50 for every other airline on the Amex menu, making it the best exit Membership Rewards currently has. This guide works through the arithmetic route by route, shows why Virgin's own seats cannot be planned against at all (a live Delhi–London search ran from 6,000 points to 76,000 depending only on the date), and is straight about the one thing Amex has not put in writing: the change carries no end date and no promotional labelling, which points to a permanent repricing, but Amex has not said so outright.

American Express SmartEarn Credit Card

The cheapest way into the Amex ecosystem — ₹495 for 10X Membership Rewards on the online platforms young spenders use. For someone who wants the Amex badge and a taste of Membership Rewards without a real fee, a reasonable on-ramp. But the 500-point monthly caps throttle the headline benefit within days, and for pure online cashback the simpler SBI Cashback card often delivers more.

American Express Gold Card

A perfectly competent Membership Rewards card that's rarely the right one. At ₹4,500 with no waiver, leaning on a monthly six-transaction bonus and lightened by the 2025 removal of fuel earning, the Gold is squeezed from both sides — the cheaper MRCC does much of the same for less, and the Platinum Charge does travel benefits properly. It fits only the heavy, deliberate MR user.

American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card

Still the travel card for people who hate the games — hit clear milestones, collect guaranteed vouchers, no portal pricing or transfer ratios. But two devaluations in 2026 moved the whole proposition up to ₹7 lakh of spend: the ₹1.9 lakh tier now pays nothing, ₹4 lakh pays 10,000 points, and the anchoring Taj card — doubled to ₹20,000 — sits at the top. Worth it at ₹7 lakh a year if you will spend at Taj; below ₹4 lakh it makes no sense. Amex has paused new applications in India, so for now this is a card to hold rather than one to apply for.

Axis dropped Accor in April 2026 and had it back by 25 September, but its better rates sit on invite-only cards. 1. ▼ FeeEffective 15 Nov 2026

50% renewal-fee waiver at ₹90,000 of spend withdrawn

100% waived at ₹1,50,000 of annual spend; 50% at ₹90,000–₹1,49,999→100% waived at ₹1,50,000 of annual spend; no 50% tier

From 15 November 2026 American Express withdraws the MRCC's 50% renewal-fee waiver, which halved the ₹4,500 (plus GST) renewal fee for a member who spent ₹90,000 to ₹1,49,999 in a card membership year. Amex's notice names only the 50% tier; the full waiver at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend, which its MRCC page lists, is not mentioned. A member spending between ₹90,000 and ₹1.5 lakh a year now pays the full fee.

  2. ▼ FeeEffective 15 Nov 2026

Late payment fee set on the total amount due

30% of the minimum amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,000→Slabs on the total amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,250

On statements generated after 15 November 2026, the late payment fee on American Express's credit cards is set by slabs of the total amount due, from ₹500 to ₹1,250, instead of 30% of the minimum amount due within ₹500 to ₹1,000. It is charged when nothing, or less than the minimum amount due, is paid by the due date. Amex says the change brings the fee in line with RBI requirements and refers members to its updated MITC, effective 15 November, for the slabs. Amex's charge cards are not affected.

  3. ▼ RedemptionEffective 15 Nov 2026

Membership Rewards points kept separately for each card

One points balance across all your basic cards→A separate balance for each card; points cannot be moved between cards

From 15 November 2026, a member who holds two or more basic American Express cards has a separate Membership Rewards balance on each card, where today the points of all of them sit in one account. Existing points are split by the card that earned them, each card redeems from its own balance, and moving points from one card to another ends for good. Earn rates, redemption options and the value of a point do not change. A member who combined several cards' points to reach a bigger redemption now has to reach it on one card's balance.

Verification: American Express ↗ · Confidence: High

  4. ◆ MilestoneEffective 15 Nov 2026

Milestone spend counted by posting date

Spend counted by purchase date→Spend counted by posting date; bonus by the end of that month

From 15 November 2026, spend towards a milestone counts on the date a transaction posts to the card rather than the date of the purchase, and the bonus points or voucher are credited by the end of the calendar month in which the milestone is reached. A purchase made on 30 November that posts in December counts towards December. Regular earning does not change, and bonuses already earned stay. A member aiming for a monthly milestone near the end of a month should allow a few days for purchases to post.

Verification: American Express ↗ · Confidence: High

  5. ◆ RewardEffective 15 Nov 2026

Points paused on a card still overdue at its next statement

No redemptions on any card while one is overdue→No earning or redemption on that card from its next statement until paid

From 15 November 2026, if a payment is still due when a card's next statement is generated, that card stops earning and redeeming Membership Rewards points from that statement date until the overdue balance is paid. Points already earned stay, and the member's other cards carry on, since each keeps its own balance. Amex's current Membership Rewards terms already forfeit the points of a statement left unpaid by the due date (reinstatable for a fee) and block redemptions on every card while any one is overdue; the new page does not say whether the forfeiture clause stays. Paying the overdue amount before the next statement date avoids the pause.
