Pros and cons
Pros
- First-year fee waived, and renewal fee reversed at Rs.1.5 lakh annual spend
- 5X Reward Points on dining, movies, grocery, departmental store and CSD spends
- 4 domestic lounge visits, concierge and milestone vouchers up to Rs.7,000
- Better base earn (2 RP per Rs.100) than the entry Shaurya card
Cons
- Eligibility is limited to armed-forces / defence personnel
- Rs.1,499 renewal fee needs Rs.1.5 lakh spend to waive
- Points are worth only Re.0.25 each; base earn is still ~0.5%
- Rewards are modest outside the 5X categories — 2 Reward Points per Rs.100 (~0.5%) on other spends
Quick verdict: The Shaurya Select is the upgraded defence card — same 5X everyday categories as the entry Shaurya, but with 4 domestic lounge visits, 24x7 concierge and milestone vouchers worth up to Rs.7,000. The first year is free; from year two you'll want Rs.1.5 lakh of annual spend to waive the Rs.1,499 fee. If you spend enough to use it, it's a solid mid-tier card for armed-forces members.
Who it's for
Like its sibling, this is a defence-personnel card for serving and retired armed-forces members, and it counts CSD canteen spends in its 5X bonus. The Select tier is aimed at those who spend more and want travel and lifestyle perks — lounges, concierge, bigger milestone rewards — layered on top of the everyday earning.
Earning: 5X where it counts, better base rate
- 10 Reward Points per Rs.100 (roughly 2.5%) on **CSD, dining, movies, departmental stores and
grocery** spends.
- 2 Reward Points per Rs.100 (about 0.5%) on everything else — double the entry Shaurya's base.
- Points are worth Re.0.25 each (4 points = Re.1).
The categories are the same well-chosen everyday set, and the base earn is a meaningful step up from the entry card. Still, at Re.0.25 a point, this is a solid-not-spectacular earner; the case for Select rests more on the perks and milestones than on a dramatically higher rate.
Fees and the waiver maths
The fee structure is the key decision point:
- First-year fee waived.
- From year two, Rs.1,499 renewal, reversed at Rs.1.5 lakh of annual spend.
If you'll comfortably cross Rs.1.5 lakh a year, the fee effectively disappears and the perks come free. If your spending is lighter, you'll pay Rs.1,499 mainly for the lounges and vouchers, even though the Select earns twice the cheaper Shaurya's rate on its 5X categories — so run the maths on your own volume before stepping up.
Perks: where Select earns its keep
- 4 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a year (max 1 per quarter).
- 24x7 concierge for gift and flower delivery, restaurant referral, courier, car rental and limousine
referral.
- Milestones: a Rs.500 Pizza Hut voucher on Rs.50,000 quarterly spend, a **Rs.7,000 Yatra or
Pantaloons voucher on Rs.5 lakh annual spend, and 1,500 Reward Points** on paying the renewal fee.
- Standard 1% fuel surcharge waiver (Rs.500–4,000, capped Rs.250 a cycle).
The Rs.7,000 annual voucher and the lounge access are the real value adds over the entry card — provided your spending reaches the thresholds.
The caveats
The Rs.10 lakh personal accident cover is a RuPay-network benefit; this card carries it, though you may need to register it per the RuPay programme. The 3.5% forex markup rules it out for foreign spend, and the milestone vouchers only pay off at fairly high spend levels.
The quarterly voucher beats the headline milestone
The milestone SBI leads with is a ₹7,000 Yatra or Pantaloons e-voucher at ₹5 lakh of annual spend. The one most holders will actually collect is quieter: ₹500 in Pizza Hut vouchers for every calendar quarter you spend ₹50,000 — up to ₹2,000 a year, reached at ₹2 lakh of annual spend rather than ₹5 lakh. For a card whose fee is waived at ₹1.5 lakh anyway, the quarterly benefit is both nearer and more reliable.
Add a third that needs no spending at all: 1,500 Reward Points every year the renewal fee is paid, not spend-gated. Between that and the ₹1.5 lakh fee waiver, the ₹1,499 renewal is less of an obstacle than it appears — and there is no joining fee.
Two limits to keep in view. The 10X band covers dining, movies, departmental stores, grocery and the CSD canteen — the distinctive inclusion for a defence-services card — but those categories share one cap rather than each carrying their own. And fuel, rent, government payments, wallet loads, online gaming and EMI conversions earn nothing, which is what puts the ₹5 lakh milestone out of reach on ordinary household spending.
The bottom line
The Shaurya Select SBI Card is a capable mid-tier defence card for armed-forces members who spend enough to justify it: first year free, 2.5% on everyday categories, a better 0.5% base, plus lounges, concierge and up to Rs.7,000 in milestone vouchers. The decision comes down to volume — if you'll clear Rs.1.5 lakh a year and use the lounges, it's a clear yes; if not, the Rs.250 Shaurya covers the same categories for a fraction of the cost — at half the rate.
