Pros and cons
Pros
- 10% Reward Points on PhonePe recharges, bills and travel (points worth ₹1 each)
- 5% on major online brands; 1% on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay
- Up to 8 domestic lounge visits/year on quarterly spend
- ₹1,000 of welcome scratch cards covers most of the ₹1,179 all-in joining fee; renewal waived at ₹2 lakh spend
Cons
- Rich rates are capped (~2,000 points/month total) and confined to PhonePe and listed online brands
- Ordinary non-UPI offline spends earn nothing
- Domestic lounge access needs ₹75,000 of spend every calendar quarter; no international lounges
- Fuel, rent, insurance, education, wallet loads, gift cards, EMI and government payments earn nothing
- The 1% Scan & Pay rate applies only to QR-code scans, not to other UPI payment modes
Quick verdict: The premium sibling of the PhonePe Uno, built for people who genuinely live inside the PhonePe app. It pays 10% Reward Points on PhonePe recharges, bills and travel (capped 1,000 points a month), 5% on a handful of big online brands, and 1% on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay — and because a point is worth a real ₹1, those rates are true cashback. The catches are equally real: the rich buckets are capped at roughly 2,000 points a month combined, ordinary offline swipes earn nothing, and the 8 domestic lounge visits only unlock if you spend ₹75,000 every quarter. Worth its ₹999 fee if, and only if, you'll max the 10% bucket.
The PhonePe HDFC Bank Ultimo is the upper tier of HDFC's PhonePe co-brand pair, sitting above the ₹499 PhonePe Uno. It's a UPI-first card — a RuPay card that links to your UPI ID — designed for the spender whose recharges, utility bills, travel bookings and Scan & Pay payments all run through one app. Get that user right and the returns are unusually high for a mid-tier card; get it wrong and you're holding a ₹999 card that earns on almost nothing.
How it works
The earning is split into three buckets, all paid in Reward Points worth ₹1 each:
- 10% on select PhonePe categories — recharges, bill payments, and travel & stays (flights, buses,
trains, hotels) booked in the app — capped at 1,000 Reward Points per calendar month.
- 5% on select online brands — Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio, Uber, Swiggy and Zomato — capped at
500 points per month.
- 1% on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay, capped at 500 points per month.
That's a combined ceiling of about 2,000 points — roughly ₹2,000 — a month. Because points redeem at ₹1 as statement credit, there's no fuzzy "point value" to discount: what you earn is what you get. (On SmartBuy flight and hotel bookings a point is worth only ₹0.30, so keep redemptions to statement credit.) The card also carries up to 8 domestic lounge visits a year and a small 1% fuel-surcharge waiver. HDFC restructured the welcome benefit on 1 August 2026: apply from that date and you get five ₹200 cashback vouchers, delivered as scratch cards, one on each of your first five UPI-on-credit-card transactions of ₹100 or more made in the PhonePe app — ₹1,000 in all, covering most (about 85%) of the ₹1,179 all-in joining fee. (Applications on or before 31 July 2026 kept the older ₹499-voucher-plus-₹50-×-10 structure.) The ₹999 renewal waives at ₹2 lakh of annual spend, though there is no waiver on the joining fee. You apply for it only inside the PhonePe app.
The catches
Two things define this card's ceiling, and you should be clear-eyed about both.
- Ordinary offline spends earn nothing. This is the single most important fact. Swipe it at a
restaurant, a fuel pump or a physical store and you get zero Reward Points. The card earns only on the PhonePe categories, the listed online brands, and RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay — nothing else.
- The rich rates are capped, and low. The 10% bucket tops out at 1,000 points a month, the other two
at 500 each. Heavy spenders hit those caps in the first week; beyond them, extra spend earns nothing. Its value tracks how much of your monthly life you can route through those specific rails.
The lounge access is gated, too. The 8 visits come as 2 per quarter, and a quarter's visits only unlock if you spent ₹75,000 in the previous calendar quarter. Fall short in one quarter and you forfeit the next quarter's visits — and there are no international lounges at all. Treat the lounge as a bonus for a genuinely active user, not a headline perk. The 3.5% forex markup also rules the card out for overseas use.
How it compares
The obvious comparison is its own cheaper sibling. The PhonePe Uno keeps the same UPI-first cashback idea at a ₹499 fee, with lower caps and no lounge gate. The Ultimo only earns its extra ₹500 of fee if you'll max the 10% recharges/bills/travel bucket and value the lounges enough to chase ₹75,000 a quarter — otherwise the Uno is the smarter buy. Against a broader HDFC co-brand like the Tata Neu Infinity, the Ultimo is narrower but sharper: 10% on a tight set of PhonePe categories versus NeuCoins across the Tata ecosystem. And against HDFC's own PIXEL Play, the Ultimo trades customisable packs for a single, richer PhonePe lane. None of these is "better" outright — they reward different spending shapes.
Who should hold it
Hold the Ultimo if your spending genuinely concentrates in PhonePe: you pay your utility bills, mobile and DTH recharges, and book travel through the app, and you'll comfortably fill the 1,000-point 10% bucket most months. For that person, ₹1,000 a month of near-guaranteed cashback plus lounge access clears the ₹999 fee with room to spare, and the ₹2 lakh waiver is well within reach.
It's the wrong card if your spending is mostly offline swipes (they earn nothing), if you spend too little through PhonePe to fill the caps (take the cheaper Uno), or if you want a card for international travel (3.5% forex, no international lounges).
The bottom line
The PhonePe HDFC Ultimo is a genuinely strong UPI-first card for a specific person: the heavy PhonePe user who'll max the 10% recharges, bills and travel bucket every month. With points worth a real ₹1, its headline rates are honest cashback, and the ₹999 fee is easily justified at that usage — mostly covered in year one by the ₹1,000 of welcome scratch cards (against ₹1,179 all-in) and waived thereafter at ₹2 lakh. But the value is entirely conditional: the caps are tight (~₹2,000 a month), the rewards are confined to PhonePe and a short brand list, ordinary offline spends earn nothing, and the lounges demand ₹75,000 every quarter. If your life runs through the app, this is one of the better mid-tier co-brands going. If it doesn't, the ₹499 PhonePe Uno — or a broader everyday card — will serve you better.
