Pros and cons
Pros
- Reward Points worth ₹1 each — a strong ratio for an entry card
- Earns on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay, which most credit cards cannot do
- 2% on PhonePe recharges/bills/travel; 1% on major online brands
- ₹500 of welcome scratch cards covers most of the ₹589 all-in fee; waived at ₹1 lakh spend
Cons
- Ordinary non-UPI offline spends earn no rewards — only the three defined buckets pay
- Each bucket is capped at 500 Reward Points/month; overall redemption capped ₹7,500/month
- Applied for only inside the PhonePe app; no website or branch channel
- Fuel, rent, insurance, education, wallet loads, gift cards, EMI and government payments earn nothing
- The 1% Scan & Pay rate applies only to QR-code scans, not to other UPI payment modes
Quick verdict: A RuPay-on-UPI entry card that pays in HDFC Reward Points worth a genuinely strong ₹1 each — but only in three buckets: 2% on PhonePe recharges, bills and travel, 1% on a handful of online brands, and 1% on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay, each capped 500 points a month. Ordinary offline swipes earn nothing, and you apply only inside the PhonePe app. Honest and well-priced for the PhonePe-first spender; the wrong card for anyone wanting rewards everywhere.
The PhonePe HDFC Bank Uno is a co-brand card built around the PhonePe app and, unusually, around UPI itself. Its headline strength is the exchange rate: 1 Reward Point = ₹1 as statement credit, which is about as clean and generous as points get in the entry segment — most rivals bury you in points worth 20–30 paise. The catch, and it's a big one you should understand before you apply, is scope: the Uno does not pay a blanket rate on ordinary swipes. Rewards accrue in only three defined buckets, each with its own monthly ceiling.
How it works
The Uno earns in three lanes, and nowhere else:
- 2% on select PhonePe categories — recharges, bills, and travel & stays (flights, bus,
trains, hotels booked in the PhonePe app), capped at 500 Reward Points/month.
- 1% on select online brands — Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio, Uber, Swiggy and Zomato —
also capped at 500 Reward Points/month.
- 1% on RuPay-credit-card-on-UPI Scan & Pay, the card's primary rail — capped at **500
Reward Points/month**. This is the genuinely modern bit: most credit cards can't earn on UPI at all, and this one turns everyday QR-code payments into rewards.
Every point is worth ₹1 as statement credit (or ₹0.30 if you redeem on SmartBuy flights and hotels — so take the cashback), and points expire two years from accrual. HDFC restructured the welcome benefit on 1 August 2026: apply from that date and you get five ₹100 cashback vouchers, delivered as scratch cards, one on each of your first five UPI-on-credit-card transactions of ₹100 or more made in the PhonePe app — ₹500 in all, covering most of the ₹589 all-in joining fee. (Applications submitted on or before 31 July 2026 kept the older structure: a ₹249 gift voucher on the first transaction plus ₹25 on each of the next ten.) The card carries a ₹499 fee that waives on ₹1 lakh of annual spend, and there's a 1% fuel surcharge waiver (capped ₹250/cycle). You apply exclusively through the PhonePe app — there is no website or branch channel. Eligibility is salaried income from ₹25,000/month; the card's page states no credit-score minimum.
The catches
Two limits define this card, and both cut the same way:
- Only the three buckets earn. A non-UPI offline swipe — the card machine at a restaurant,
a shop, a fuel pump — returns nothing. If a meaningful slice of your spending is ordinary card-present retail, the Uno simply won't reward it. Be honest with yourself about where your money actually goes before you count on the ₹1-a-point rate.
- Each bucket caps at 500 points/month (overall redemption capped ₹7,500/month). That means
the 2% PhonePe lane tops out at ₹25,000 of qualifying spend a month, and each 1% lane at ₹50,000. Comfortable for a moderate spender; a hard ceiling for a heavy one.
It's HDFC, so reliability and the SmartBuy plumbing are solid. But the 3.5% forex markup rules out international use, and the app-only application means you're inside the PhonePe ecosystem from day one.
How it compares
The Uno sits between two useful reference points. Its sibling, the PhonePe HDFC Ultimo, is the premium-tier version of the same idea — much higher accelerated rates (10%/5%) plus lounge access — but at a higher fee, and its economics only reward a bigger spend. If your PhonePe and online-brand spends comfortably fill the Uno's ₹500-per-bucket caps every month with room to spare, the Ultimo's ceilings and perks start to earn their keep; if they don't, you'd be paying more for headroom you never use.
At the other end, the HDFC UPI RuPay is a simpler, lower-commitment way to earn on UPI without tying yourself to one app. And if your spending rotates across categories rather than living on PhonePe, a customisable cashback card like the HDFC PIXEL Play will likely serve you better — it rewards a broader basket, including ordinary online spends the Uno ignores. The right pick is genuinely a function of where you spend, not which card looks best on paper.
Who should hold it
The Uno suits the PhonePe-first, UPI-heavy spender — someone who pays by Scan & Pay, runs recharges and bill payments and travel bookings through the PhonePe app, shops the listed online brands, and whose monthly spend in each lane sits inside the 500-point cap. For that person the ₹1-per-point rate is real money, the welcome covers most of the fee, and the ₹1 lakh waiver is easy to clear. It's a smart first or second card for the UPI generation.
It's the wrong card for anyone who spends mostly on ordinary offline retail (those swipes earn nothing), for heavy single-lane spenders (the caps bind fast), and for international use (3.5% forex).
The bottom line
The PhonePe HDFC Uno is a well-priced, UPI-era entry card whose ₹1-per-point rate is unusually honest for the segment — a genuine strength worth stating plainly. The trade-off is scope: it earns in only three buckets — 2% on PhonePe recharges, bills and travel, 1% on select online brands, and 1% on RuPay-on-UPI Scan & Pay — each capped at 500 points a month, and ordinary offline spends return nothing. That makes its value real only if your spending lives inside PhonePe and the listed brands. For that user it comfortably beats its ₹499 fee and is one of the cleaner-value entry cards going. For everyone else, look to a card that rewards a broader basket.
