Pros and cons
Pros
- 10% reward points on PhonePe utilities, recharges and bill payments — a category most cards exclude
- 1 RP = ₹1, redeemable as statement credit (effectively real cashback)
- ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card on joining covers most of the ₹1,769 all-in first-year fee
- Complimentary domestic lounge access plus a ₹5,000 Yatra voucher at ₹5 lakh spend
Cons
- July 2026 devaluation: caps cut to 1,500 RP/month (general), 1,000 (online) and just 500 RP/month on insurance
- Best rate only inside the PhonePe app — spends routed elsewhere earn 1% or nothing
- Exclusions — tolls, gifts, jewellery, education, and insurance/utility/UPI outside PhonePe earn no points
- 3.5% forex markup — not for international use
Quick verdict: A PhonePe × SBI co-brand that pays its best rate where most cards pay nothing — 10% reward points (1 RP = ₹1) on bill payments, recharges and utilities routed through the PhonePe app. A 1 July 2026 devaluation cut the caps, so it now rewards routine household bills, not large one-off payments. A ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card covers most of the ₹1,769 all-in first-year fee, and the fee is waived at ₹3 lakh. A genuinely useful card for PhonePe loyalists; ordinary outside the app.
The one thing it does that few cards do
Most reward cards quietly exclude the spends that fill an Indian household's month — electricity, gas, broadband, mobile recharges, insurance. The PhonePe SBI SELECT BLACK does the opposite: route those through the PhonePe app and they earn 10% reward points, and because 1 RP = ₹1 redeemed as statement credit, that 10% behaves like real cashback. For a family running ₹10,000–15,000 of bills and recharges through PhonePe a month, that is meaningful money on spends other cards ignore.
Outside the PhonePe app, the card steps down: 5% on other online spends, and 1% on UPI (RuPay scan & pay) and everything else.
The July 2026 devaluation — read this before you apply
Less than a year after launch, SBI trimmed the card. From 1 July 2026:
- The PhonePe-app cap fell to 1,500 RP/month (was 2,000).
- Online spends are capped at 1,000 RP/month (was 2,000). The 1% base on UPI and everything else keeps its 2,000 RP cap.
- Insurance is capped at just 500 RP/month — so the 10% only covers about ₹5,000 of insurance premium
a month; large annual premiums overflow to nothing.
- New exclusions: tolls and bridges, gifts and souvenirs, jewellery, education, and any
insurance/utility/UPI routed outside PhonePe.
The takeaway: this is now a card for steady, modest monthly bills, not for parking a big insurance premium or a one-off tax payment.
The fee maths
The fee is ₹1,499 + GST, but a ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card on joining covers about 85% of the ₹1,769 all-in first-year fee, and ₹3 lakh of annual spend waives renewal. Hit ₹5 lakh and you also get a ₹5,000 Yatra voucher. Complimentary domestic airport lounge access rounds it out. For an active PhonePe user, the card pays for itself; for a light user, the fee is real.
Who should hold it
The SELECT BLACK suits the PhonePe-first household with regular utility, recharge and bill-payment spend that fits comfortably under the 1,500 RP cap — and who will redeem points as statement credit. Pair it with a flat cashback card (the SBI Cashback, say) for the spends that fall outside the PhonePe ecosystem.
It is the wrong card for anyone with large, lumpy insurance or tax payments (the 500 RP insurance cap and exclusions throttle you), for people who won't route spends through PhonePe, and for anyone who wants one simple uncapped card.
Everything here depends on paying inside the PhonePe app
This is the card's defining condition and it deserves stating plainly: the headline rates are not category rates, they are app rates. The 10% applies to utilities, recharges, bills and travel paid through the PhonePe app. The same bills paid anywhere else earn nothing — utilities outside PhonePe, insurance outside PhonePe and UPI outside PhonePe are named exclusions, not oversights. Move your bill payments into one app and the card is strong; keep paying them through a biller portal or another UPI app and the 10% never fires once.
The exclusion list is the longest on SBI's shelf, and it is worth reading in full: fuel, wallet loads, rent, education fees, government payments, online gaming, EMI conversions, tolls and bridges, gift cards and vouchers, and jewellery all earn nothing.
There is also a devaluation to price in. The 5% online-shopping cap was cut to 1,000 Reward Points a month from July 2026 — at a point to the rupee, that is ₹1,000 of monthly value, reached at ₹20,000 of online spend. The 1% base on UPI and everything else is separately capped at 2,000 points a month. The annual fee is waived at ₹3 lakh of spend.
The bottom line
The PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK earns its place by paying 10% on the bills and recharges most cards refuse to reward — and 1 RP = ₹1 makes that genuine cashback. The July 2026 cap cuts (1,500 RP on PhonePe-app spends, 1,000 online, 500 on insurance) dented its ceiling and fenced its value firmly inside the PhonePe app, so it is best read as a household bill-payment card, not an all-rounder. For the right PhonePe user it is excellent value; for everyone else, the SBI Cashback is the simpler pick.
