Pros and cons
Pros
- 4.25% value back on BPCL fuel — 13X Reward Points plus the 1% surcharge waiver
- 5X Reward Points (~1.25%) on dining, departmental stores, grocery and movies
- Low ₹499 fee, reversed at ₹1 lakh annual spend (from 1 May 2026)
- 2,000-point (~₹500) welcome gift covers most of the ₹589 all-in first-year fee
Cons
- Fuel value is BPCL-only — no benefit at other petrol pumps
- Points are worth just ₹0.25 each (4 points = ₹1)
- BPCL fuel reward capped at 1,300 points per cycle (~₹325 value)
- Only 0.25% on general spends outside the bonus categories
Quick verdict: A ₹499 fuel card that pays 4.25% value back at BPCL pumps, adds 5X points on dining, groceries and movies, and hands you a welcome gift that covers most of the ₹589 all-in first-year fee. Solid if BPCL is your regular pump — but the reward points are worth only ₹0.25 each, and the fuel value is strictly BPCL-only.
The BPCL SBI Card is the entry-level sibling of the BPCL SBI Octane. Both are built around a single loyalty: if you fill up at Bharat Petroleum, they turn that spend into meaningful value; if you don't, there is little reason to carry either.
How it earns
- 4.25% value back at BPCL pumps — 13X Reward Points (equal to 3.25%) plus a 1% fuel surcharge waiver,
on transactions up to ₹4,000. The reward-point portion is capped at 1,300 points a billing cycle (~₹325 value).
- 5 Reward Points per ₹100 (~1.25%) on dining, departmental stores, grocery and movies, with a
combined cap of 5,000 points a month.
- 1 Reward Point per ₹100 (~0.25%) on other retail spends. Mobile wallet loads, rent payments and non-BPCL fuel earn
nothing.
The honest caveat is point value: 4 Reward Points = ₹1, so each point is ₹0.25. That is why the headline "13X" translates to 3.25%, not something dramatic. Redemption is against BPCL fuel or the Shop n Smile catalogue.
Fees and welcome benefit
The ₹499 fee is easy to justify: a 2,000-point welcome gift worth ₹500 lands within 20 days of paying the joining fee, covering about 85% of the ₹589 all-in first-year fee. From 1 May 2026 the renewal fee is reversed on annual spends of ₹1 lakh (raised from the earlier ₹50,000) — a higher bar than before, but still reachable for a regular spender.
The benefits
Beyond rewards, you get a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on BPCL transactions up to ₹4,000, capped at ₹100 a statement cycle (~₹1,200 a year) — this is bundled into the headline 4.25% figure, not additional to it. The card also supports instant redemption of points at select BPCL pumps, which is genuinely convenient at the forecourt.
Who should hold it
The BPCL SBI Card fits the regular BPCL fuel customer — a commuter with steady monthly fuel spend who also puts dining, groceries and movies on the card. For that person the 4.25% fuel value and 1.25% bonus categories add up, and the fee is easily recovered.
It is the wrong card for anyone who doesn't use BPCL — the fuel value simply doesn't apply at other pumps, and 0.25% on general spends is poor. It is also not an everyday all-rounder; pair it with a broad card like SBI Cashback for non-fuel spending. If your fuel spend is high, weigh the BPCL SBI Octane, and if you fill up at Indian Oil instead, look at the HDFC IndianOil.
One cap covers dining and grocery together
The 5X band is easy to over-count. Dining, departmental stores, grocery and movies all earn 5 Reward Points per ₹100 — but they share a single 5,000-point ceiling per statement cycle, not one ceiling each. At the four-points-to-a-rupee conversion that caps the whole group at about ₹1,250 of value a cycle, reached at roughly ₹1 lakh of combined spend across all four categories. Reading it as 5,000 points for grocery and 5,000 for dining overstates the card by a wide margin.
Two other numbers are worth having. The annual fee is waived on ₹1 lakh of spend, a low bar for anyone using this as their fuel card. And outside fuel and the 5X band the base rate is 1 Reward Point per ₹100 — about 0.25%, with wallet loads, rent payments, EMI conversions and cash advances earning nothing.
None of that undermines the core case. At BPCL pumps the card returns about 4.25% — 13X points plus the 1% surcharge waiver — and that is what it is for. Just don't expect the rest of the card to keep pace.
The bottom line
The BPCL SBI Card is a well-priced entry fuel card for Bharat Petroleum loyalists: 4.25% back at BPCL, a welcome gift worth most of the first-year fee, and useful bonus categories. Just go in clear-eyed that the value is BPCL-tied and the points are worth ₹0.25 each — hold it as a dedicated fuel card, not your only one.
