IRCTC SBI Card Premier

The IRCTC SBI Premier is a rare card built specifically around railway booking — 8% value-back on AC-class IRCTC tickets, a 1% railway transaction-charge waiver and railway-station lounge access (8 visits/year), for ₹1,499. That 8% is 10 reward points per ₹125, redeeming 1:1 against IRCTC; IRCTC markets the same benefit as "up to 10%" by reading those points against ₹100, but SBI's T&C states ₹125 and that is the figure we use. Off-rail it earns a 1 RP per ₹125 base — about 0.8%, because SBI sweeps the points to your IRCTC account monthly where each is worth ₹1 — plus 3X on dining and on utility bills paid by standing instruction, and 4% on IRCTC air bookings and e-catering (capped at 750 points a statement cycle). The fee waives at ₹2 lakh. For the crores of Indians whose intercity travel is rail, it is one of a handful of cards built around that reality, and a regular AC traveller recovers its fee within months. Off-rail earning is ordinary and points redeem only against IRCTC tickets, so pair it with a generalist.

IRCTC SBI Card Premier

A rare card built specifically around railway booking — 8% value back on AC-class tickets (SBI's T&C pays 10 reward points per ₹125, not the ₹100 IRCTC advertises) plus railway-station lounge access for ₹1,499. For the crores of Indians whose intercity travel is rail, it's one of a handful of cards built around that reality, and the richer of SBI's two IRCTC cards; a regular AC traveller recovers its fee within months. Off-rail earning is ordinary and points redeem only against IRCTC tickets, so pair it with a generalist.

Utility Bills: 3 RP per ₹125 (~2.4%) on utility bills paid by standing instruction. One-off utility payments earn the base rate

Other: 1 RP per ₹125 (~0.8%) base. SBI sweeps the whole point balance to your IRCTC loyalty account on the 15th of each month, where 1 point is worth ₹1 against a ticket — so the catalogue rate never applies. Worth ₹1 only if you actually book AC rail

Earns nothing on: Fuel · Rent · Government & Tax · Wallet Loads · Cash Advances

These spends earn no rewards at all — not a reduced rate, and not the base rate. They are also normally left out of any milestone or fee-waiver calculation.

Fees & charges

The numbers that matter beyond rewards — verify on the issuer site before applying. Fees below are shown inclusive of 18% GST, as of 11 Oct 2026.

Should you get it?

  • Best for: IRCTC regular booker (2+ train trips/month), Corporate traveller on Rajdhani or Shatabdi class, Does not fly domestically — train is the primary inter-city mode, Family of 4 booking multiple tickets per journey
  • Mid tier — a solid all-rounder for steady monthly spend.
  • Strongest value if you spend heavily on Dining (2.4% back; 8% only at IRCTC).
  • Frequent travellers benefit from the included airport lounge access.

Pros & cons

✓ Pros

  • Highest IRCTC reward rate — 8% value-back on AC-class train tickets, far above the standard reward on any general card
  • Railway lounge access at 8 major stations — wait in comfort on long journeys
  • The ₹1,769 all-in annual fee is recovered by about ₹22,000 of AC-class tickets at the 8% rate

✕ Cons

  • Value entirely concentrated in IRCTC bookings — non-IRCTC spend earns a standard rate
  • Points hit full value only against IRCTC bookings — SBI transfers the whole balance to IRCTC on the 15th of each month, so there is no catalogue fallback
  • No airport lounge access — travellers who mix train and air travel need a separate card

How to redeem rewards

Ways to convert what you earn into real value.

  • 🎁Points are swept to your IRCTC loyalty account on the 15th of every month — the SBI Card balance then reads zero, so the Shop & Smile catalogue is not a route on this card
  • 🎁Redeem the transferred points against IRCTC train and air ticket bookings at 1 point = ₹1

The concern

Points redeem only against IRCTC tickets — SBI sweeps the whole balance to IRCTC monthly, so the ₹1 rate is real but only if you actually book AC rail. Off-rail earning is a modest 0.8% base, so the card's value is entirely tied to how much you travel by train.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 8% earn rate?
AC-class IRCTC ticket bookings earn 8% value-back — 10 reward points per ₹125, redeeming 1:1 against IRCTC. (IRCTC advertises "up to 10%" by reading the same 10 points against ₹100; SBI's terms state ₹125, and that is the figure we use.) Off-rail spend earns the standard base rate. In effective-return terms this card's best everyday earn is 2.4% on dining, against 0.8% on other spends — percentages here are the real return after converting points at their card-specific value, not the headline points-per-₹100. It reaches 8% at IRCTC, and only there. Figures as of October 2026.
What is the 1% IRCTC transaction charge waiver?
IRCTC levies a 1.8% + GST transaction fee on credit card bookings. This card waives 1 percentage point of it on railway bookings, and the full 1.8% on IRCTC air bookings — so you still pay the rest on rail. Note SBI's own 64-page booklet does not mention this benefit at all; it is published by IRCTC. The renewal fee is ₹1,499 plus 18% GST — ₹1,769 all-in, which is the figure that actually hits the statement. Spending ₹2,00,000 in the card year waives the renewal fee — about ₹16,667 a month. Figures as of October 2026.
What railway lounges are accessible?
Lounges at New Delhi, Agra Cantonment, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur stations — 2 visits per quarter. As per the card's current benefit schedule: 8 complimentary railway lounge visits a year (2 per quarter) at participating stations. Figures as of October 2026.
Does it work for sleeper class tickets?
Verify with SBI — the accelerated earn is typically on AC class tickets. Sleeper class may earn at base rate.
Is there airport lounge access?
No — only railway station lounge access. Carry a separate card for airport lounges.
Are there spend milestones?
SBI publishes two — 2,500 Reward Points at ₹50,000 of annual TRAVEL spend and 5,000 at ₹1 lakh, where eligible travel means travel agents and railways only. We deliberately do not score them, because our threshold field measures total annual spend and would credit them to someone who spends ₹1 lakh on anything at all. Treat them as real but unmodelled.

The bottom line

A genuinely category-defining card for rail travellers: 8% on AC-class IRCTC tickets, a 1% transaction-charge waiver and station lounges make it pay for itself within months for a regular traveller. The catch is narrowness — off-rail earning is ordinary and points redeem only against IRCTC tickets, so it is a specialist to pair with a generalist, not a primary card.

How this page was built

Counted from this card’s own record: 4 earn rules, 1 paid only at named merchants, the spends listed as earning nothing and 3 recorded perks. The renewal fee is conditional — it is waived on a published spend target, so the fee you pay depends on what you spend.

IRCTC SBI Platinum Card

A ₹500 co-brand for train travellers: 8% value back on IRCTC AC-class tickets (SBI advertises "up to 10%"; its own terms pay 10 points per ₹125, not ₹100), 4 railway lounge visits a year, and a 500-point renewal bonus worth most of the fee. Great if you book rail often — weak at almost everything else.

→

RBL Bank IRCTC Credit Card

A rail-first RuPay co-brand that pays back the IRCTC booking fee and earns 2.5% on train tickets, with eight railway-lounge visits a year. Nearly all its value sits inside the IRCTC ecosystem — off-platform spends earn a token 0.5% and the ₹500 fee has no waiver — so it is a companion card for train travellers, not an everyday earner.

→

IRCTC BOBCARD RuPay Credit Card

The IRCTC BOBCARD is a railway co-brand for frequent train travellers: 16 reward points per ₹100 (~4% at ₹0.25/point) on IRCTC AC-class tickets year-round, rising to 40 RP/₹100 (~10%) only in two seasonal windows, plus railway lounge access and a surcharge waiver. The eye-catching 10% is seasonal — the card's real value tracks the ~4% standard rate and how much you book by rail.

    Rail accident cover withdrawn

SBI's notice, carried verbatim in the current Premier T&C booklet, reads: "With effect from 26th July'25, the complimentary Rail Accident insurance coverage of Rs. 10 lakhs currently offered on your IRCTC SBI Card Premier discontinued." CORRECTED 2026-08-06: we had recorded BOTH covers as withdrawn. Clause 13 of the same current booklet still grants "an air accident cover of 50 lakh by the United India Insurance Company Limited", and IRCTC publishes a ₹1 lakh fraud liability cover alongside it. The rail cover is genuinely gone; the air cover was never part of this notice. Our earlier fix removed a real, live benefit while correcting a false one.
