Lifetime-free credit cards carry no joining fee and no annual fee, ever — so you earn rewards at zero holding cost. They’re ideal as a first card, a backup card, or a no-fuss everyday card for anyone who doesn’t want to chase a spend-based fee waiver.
While lifetime-free cards rarely match premium cards on perks, the best ones still offer solid cashback or reward points, UPI linkage, and basic benefits. Because there’s no fee to recover, every reward is pure profit. The cards below are our editors’ picks for a lifetime-free card, strongest first.

International spends stop earning reward points
Reward points on international spends at the card's own rate→No reward points on international spends
From 26 October 2026 IDFC FIRST Bank credit cards stop earning reward points on international spends, except the Ashva, Mayura, Gaj, FIRST Private, FIRST WOW!, FIRST WOW! Black and IndiGo cards. IDFC announced it in its 9 September 2026 letter to cardmembers, the same letter that removed the forex markup, so paying abroad still costs no markup but earns nothing. On the Classic, Millennia, Select and FIRST Wealth this ends the 10X rate on international spends.

Forex markup removed
1% to 3.5%, depending on the card→0% (nil)
IDFC FIRST Bank stopped charging a markup on foreign-currency spends on all its credit cards from 9 September 2026, the effective date its letter to cardmembers gives. Its Key Fact Statement dated 15 September 2026 lists the markup on foreign-currency and currency-conversion transactions as nil, with no card-by-card exception, where the January 2026 edition charged 3.5% on most cards and less on a few (1.99% on the FIRST Select, 1.5% on the FIRST Wealth, 1.49% on the IndiGo card and 1% on the Ashva). The same letter says international spends stop earning reward points from 26 October 2026 on most IDFC FIRST cards; that is recorded as its own change.

3-month Swiggy One welcome membership ends
Complimentary 3-month Swiggy One membership on activating the card within 30 days, alongside 12-month Times Prime→Swiggy One offer ended; 12-month Times Prime remains
HSBC's introductory offer of a complimentary 3-month Swiggy One membership, for primary cardholders who activated the card within 30 days of issuance, ran from 15 September 2025 to 31 August 2026 and has not been extended: HSBC's product page no longer lists it. The 12-month Times Prime subscription is unaffected.

Moved to category rewards; base cut ₹150→₹200
1 RP per ₹150; 10X above ₹20k/mo, 3X below→1 RP per ₹200; 10X dining/travel/intl, 3X other, 1X utility/rail/insurance/FASTag
Effective 18 June 2026 the base earning basis was cut from ₹150 to ₹200 per point (~25% fewer points) and the spend-tier model was replaced by categories: 10X on dining, travel, international and birthday spends, 3X on other eligible spends, and 1X on insurance, utility, rail, FASTag and UPI (capped at ₹2,000/cycle). Point value stays ₹0.25.

Points get 24-month expiry + credit-limit earn cap
Points never expired; no per-cycle earn cap; movie BOGO ungated→24-month expiry; points only up to credit limit/cycle; movie BOGO needs ₹20k spend
Reward points earned from the July 2026 statement cycle expire 24 months after being credited (previously lifetime-valid; existing balances valid to July 2028), and points now accrue only on spends up to the assigned credit limit per billing cycle. The Buy-1-Get-1 movie benefit now needs ₹20,000 of prior-month spend.

Dynamic Currency Conversion fee doubled to 2%
1% mark-up + taxes→2% + GST
From 15 June 2026 the mark-up on transactions billed in Indian rupees at an international location, or with merchants located in India but registered overseas, doubled from 1% to 2% + GST on the Tiger, which IndusInd's MITC names in its 2% list. Premium cards such as Celesta, Pinnacle, Indulge and Crest were held at 1%. The charge is avoidable: choose to be billed in the merchant's local currency.

New 1% surcharge on transport spends above ₹40,000/cycle
No transport surcharge→1% + GST above ₹40,000 per cycle
From 15 June 2026 IndusInd charges 1% + GST once a statement cycle's cumulative transport spends pass ₹40,000. The category is MCCs 4111, 4112, 4131 and 4784 (local commuter transport, rail, bus lines, and tolls and bridge fees); air travel is excluded. Only the Pioneer Private, Pioneer Heritage and Indus Solitaire are exempt, so the Tiger is in scope.

Air India Maharaja Club 1:1 transfers go live
No airline transfer partner→Points → Air India Maharaja Club at 1:1 (up to 25,000 pts/month)
IndusInd made Tiger reward-point transfers to Air India Maharaja Club live on 1 June 2026 at a 1:1 ratio, capped at 25,000 points/month via IndusMoments — restoring an airline transfer route (~1.5x the ₹0.40/point cash value) roughly 19 months after the Vistara route closed.

Complimentary lounge visits halved
2 domestic + 2 international per quarter→1 domestic + 1 international per quarter
From April 2026 free lounge visits were halved to 1 domestic + 1 international per quarter (down from 2 each), still gated on ₹20,000 of prior-month spend — a second successive trim to the card's once-generous lounge benefit.

Rent, high-fuel and third-party-education payments pick up 1% fees
None→1% on rent (min ₹249); 1% on fuel above ₹30,000/cycle; 1% on education via third-party apps (min ₹249)
IDFC FIRST's 2026 fee schedule added a 1% Rent and Property Management fee (minimum ₹249 a transaction, MCC 6513), a 1% fee on statement-cycle fuel spends above ₹30,000, and a 1% fee (minimum ₹249) on education payments routed through third-party apps. These sit alongside the earlier FASTag/toll (above ₹10,000/cycle) and railway (above ₹25,000/cycle) fees. None of them applies to the FIRST Private card.

Complimentary air-accident insurance withdrawn
Complimentary air-accident cover provided with the card→No air-accident cover
On 21 December 2025 IndusInd discontinued the complimentary air-accident insurance feature across its credit cards, stating simply that the coverage "stands discontinued". The bank published no replacement and named no exempt card. Note that several IndusInd product pages still described the cover months afterwards — the Avios, Duo, Pioneer Private and Platinum pages all still advertised it in August 2026 — so a reader may encounter the old wording on IndusInd's own site; the dated withdrawal notice is the operative statement. Other insurance benefits are unaffected: lost-card liability, Total Protect fraud cover, travel insurance and purchase protection continue where the card carried them.

Card moved to Visa Signature with lifestyle benefits
Visa Platinum platform, no bundled memberships→Visa Signature platform + 1-year Times Prime, MakeMyTrip perks and tap-to-pay fuel cashback
From 1 September 2025 HSBC re-platformed the card from Visa Platinum to Visa Signature at no fee, adding a complimentary one-year Times Prime membership, two MakeMyTrip flight seat selections (up to ₹350 each) plus 15% MyCash on domestic hotels, and ₹250-per-quarter cashback on tap-to-pay fuel spends over ₹10,000. It repositioned a bare no-fee card as a memberships vehicle.

Accelerated 5X milestone reward withdrawn
5X reward points (per ₹150) once annual spends cross ₹4 lakh→Accelerated 5X milestone bonus discontinued
HSBC withdrew the accelerated 5X reward-points benefit that Platinum holders earned after crossing ₹4 lakh of annual spend, effective 31 August 2025. Customers who had already hit the threshold kept the bonus until their card anniversary or 31 August 2026, whichever came first. The base earn of 2 points per ₹150 was unchanged.

HSBC revamps rewards programme with 20 transfer partners
Points redeemable for merchandise, vouchers and limited airmiles conversion→Points transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners (15 airlines + 5 hotels) at 2:1, tracked in-app
HSBC India overhauled its rewards platform, letting Platinum cardholders move reward points to about 20 airline and hotel loyalty programmes (roughly 15 airlines and 5 hotel chains) at a 2:1 ratio, with earning and redemption tracked in the mobile banking app. This materially raised the ceiling on what a Platinum point can be worth to a traveller.

New 1% fee on fuel spends above ₹50,000/cycle
No bank fee on fuel spends→1% + GST on cumulative fuel above ₹50,000 per statement cycle
From 4 May 2025, once a statement cycle's fuel spends pass ₹50,000, IndusInd charges 1% + GST on the whole cycle's fuel spend, not just the excess. The fee is separate from the Tiger's 1% fuel-surcharge waiver and is not offset by it. When IndusInd revised its fuel fee on 15 June 2026, its MITC kept the Tiger at the ₹50,000 threshold while many other IndusInd cards moved to ₹30,000.
