I'll be direct with you upfront: the Tata Neu credit cards are niche products. They're very good for a specific kind of spender — someone who buys groceries from BigBasket, shops electronics at Croma, refills prescriptions at Tata 1mg, and shops apparel at Westside and Zudio regularly — and mediocre for everyone else.
Whether that niche is yours is what this guide will tell you.
This guide covers the two HDFC cards specifically. The NeuCoin currency underneath — what a NeuCoin is worth, the NeuPass bonus, expiry and redemption — is a Tata Neu app feature that works identically on the SBI-issued Tata Neu cards too; that shared rulebook lives in the Tata NeuCoins & NeuPass guide.
What is 1 NeuCoin worth?
1 NeuCoin = ₹1 when you redeem inside the Tata Neu app. On the redemption side there's no degraded "reward catalogue" rate — a NeuCoin is worth ₹1 whether you're a brand-new user or a long-standing one. (Earning is a different story: how many NeuCoins you get on Tata Neu spends depends on your NeuPass standing — more on that below. Don't confuse the two — the redemption value is a flat ₹1; only the earn rate varies.) The single constraint is that NeuCoins only work inside the Tata ecosystem (BigBasket, Croma, Tata 1mg, Tata CLiQ, Westside, Air India via the app), so a NeuCoin is worth exactly ₹1 if you shop there and effectively ₹0 if you don't. That transparency is actually a strength: unlike bank reward points that shrink in value when you transfer or redeem them, a NeuCoin never loses value on redemption — it just has to be spent where Tata accepts it. The one catch is time: per HDFC's terms, since August 2025 NeuCoins are valid 12 months from the end of the month they're credited, so you have to both earn and burn them within a year.

The two cards, quickly
HDFC Bank issues both Tata Neu cards in partnership with the Tata Group. They run on the RuPay network, which matters more than it sounds — I'll explain why when we get to UPI.
HDFC Tata Neu Plus:
- Annual fee: ₹499 (waivable at ₹1L spend/year)
- Earn on Tata brands: 2% NeuCoins
- Earn on everything else: 1% NeuCoins
- Complimentary NeuPass membership (a free Tata Neu registration that unlocks the accelerated NeuCoin rates)
HDFC Tata Neu Infinity:
- Annual fee: ₹1,499 (waivable at ₹3L spend/year)
- Earn on Tata brands: 5% NeuCoins
- Earn on everything else: 1.5% NeuCoins
- Complimentary NeuPass membership (free registration that unlocks the accelerated rates)
- Welcome benefit: 1,499 NeuCoins on joining (about 85% of the ₹1,769 all-in Year 1 fee, ₹1,499 + GST)
The gap between Plus and Infinity is entirely in the Tata ecosystem earn rate: 2% vs 5%. Non-Tata spend earns 1% vs 1.5% — a difference so small it barely matters.
What NeuCoins actually are
A NeuCoin is a simple proposition: 1 NeuCoin = ₹1 when spent within the Tata Neu app. No degraded redemption catalogue, no "points value" that shrinks when you actually redeem. You earn ₹X in NeuCoins, you spend ₹X on Tata brands.
The trade-off is the locked ecosystem. Unlike reward points that transfer to airlines or hotel programs, or cashback that hits your statement, NeuCoins are only spendable at:
- BigBasket (groceries and household)
- Croma (electronics)
- Tata 1mg (pharmacy and wellness)
- Air India & Air India Express (flights, via Tata Neu app — the former AirAsia India is now part of Air India Express)
- Tata CLiQ (fashion and lifestyle)
- Westside, Zudio
- Qmin (Tata hospitality dining)
If your life runs through these brands regularly, 1:1 NeuCoin redemption is excellent. If you don't shop at Croma and BigBasket isn't your grocery app, NeuCoins pile up unused.
The UPI angle — and why it matters
Both cards run on RuPay, and that's where something genuinely useful happens. RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM) and earn reward points on UPI transactions.
This is rarer than it sounds. Most credit cards on Visa and Mastercard do not earn points on UPI payments. But HDFC trimmed the UPI earn in August 2024, so the current structure has real limits worth knowing:
- You earn the card's normal rate (1% Plus / 1.5% Infinity) only on UPI paid via your Tata Neu UPI ID.
- UPI through any other UPI ID earns a reduced rate (roughly 0.25% on Plus, 0.5% on Infinity).
- Total UPI NeuCoins are capped at 500 per month on both cards.
For someone who pays rent, small merchants, auto-rickshaw fares, and utility bills via UPI, this is still a real earn layer that most other cards miss entirely. Just calibrate expectations: the 500-NeuCoin monthly cap means UPI tops out at about ₹500/month of value, and only spend routed through your Tata Neu UPI ID earns the full rate.
Spend math: who actually benefits
Let me run three scenarios, using the Infinity card (the more commonly considered option).
Scenario A — Heavy Tata ecosystem spender:
| Category | Monthly spend | Earn rate | NeuCoins |
|---|---|---|---|
| BigBasket groceries | ₹8,000 | 5% | 400 |
| Croma purchase | ₹4,000 | 5% | 200 |
| Tata 1mg pharmacy | ₹2,000 | 5% | 100 |
| Other spend | ₹10,000 | 1.5% | 150 |
| Total NeuCoins | 850/month |
At 850 NeuCoins/month (= ₹850 credit on Tata brands), the ₹1,499 annual fee pays back in under two months. The card works.
Scenario B — Light Tata ecosystem spender:
| Category | Monthly spend | Earn rate | NeuCoins |
|---|---|---|---|
| BigBasket occasional | ₹2,000 | 5% | 100 |
| Everything else | ₹20,000 | 1.5% | 300 |
| Total NeuCoins | 400/month |
400 NeuCoins/month = ₹4,800/year. Against ₹1,499 fee, net return is ₹3,301. That sounds fine — but SBI Cashback earns 5% on online spend (including BigBasket) and 1% offline, with no ecosystem restriction.
On the same ₹22,000, what SBI Cashback returns depends entirely on how much of the "everything else" ₹20,000 is actually online, and that is not a detail you can wave through. If every rupee were online, the card pays ₹1,100/month — and that is the ceiling, not a midpoint, because 5% of ₹22,000 is ₹1,100 and nothing about this card pays more. On a realistic half-online, half-offline split it is closer to ₹700/month. Below that, if most of your spend is at physical merchants, it falls towards the 1% offline rate and the comparison inverts.
So the fair statement is narrower than the one we used to print here: SBI Cashback beats the Tata Neu Infinity in this scenario if your spending is genuinely online-first, and its advantage shrinks with every rupee you spend offline. What it does keep in all cases is the absence of a currency lock — cashback to statement, no NeuCoins to spend inside one conglomerate's app before they expire.
Scenario C — UPI-heavy spender:
If your monthly UPI spend runs to ₹15,000–₹20,000 across merchants that don't take card, and you also do ₹3,000–₹5,000 on BigBasket, the NeuCoin earn on UPI adds a layer no Visa/Mastercard card gives you. Be realistic about the ceiling, though: UPI NeuCoins are capped at 500/month (~₹500), and you only get the full rate on your Tata Neu UPI ID — so treat UPI as a useful top-up, not the reason to hold the card.
NeuPass: the extra layer on Tata Neu spends
NeuPass is a free membership you register for inside the Tata Neu app — not a paid subscription the card buys for you, so don't count a separate rupee value for it. What it does, in HDFC's own words, is reward you with "additional up to 5% NeuCoins on selected categories on Tata Neu," on top of the card's own earn. That's where the Infinity's "up to 10%" comes from — 5% (card) + up to 5% (NeuPass); on the Plus it's 2% + up to 5% ≈ up to 7%.
Read the "up to" and "selected categories" carefully: it is not a flat 5% on everything you buy on Tata Neu. NeuPass has membership tiers, and the bonus you actually get depends on your standing and on what you're buying, so your real Tata Neu rate can sit below the headline. Check your current NeuPass status and the live category rates in the Tata Neu app or on the official NeuPass page — those are the only source that shows your rate.
One more thing HDFC spells out: "each brand may provide additional NeuCoins… as per their policy." So brands like Titan/Tanishq, IHCL/Taj and Air India Express reward you according to their own loyalty programme, not a blanket NeuPass rate — worth checking each brand's own scheme if you spend heavily there.
The traps and fine print
A handful of details quietly decide whether these cards pay what the marketing promises. Everything below is from HDFC's own Tata Neu Infinity card page and product terms.
Route purchases through the Tata Neu app. The higher NeuPass earn is tied to buying inside the Tata Neu app on selected categories. Buy from a brand's own website or app and you typically fall to the base rate. This is the single most common mistake — people shop Croma's own website and wonder why they never see the big number.
Insurance and utility bills earn the base rate, not 5%. This one is widely misreported, so state it plainly: HDFC's official terms put insurance, utility, grocery and telecom in the base 1.5% bucket (each capped at 2,000 NeuCoins a month), and reserve the 5% strictly for partner-Tata-brand spend. If you route bills through the app expecting 5%, you won't get it — and NeuCoins can't be redeemed on Bill Payment anyway. Check any convenience fee the app shows at checkout before deciding a bill is worth paying this way; a cashback or dedicated utility card is usually the better tool for bills.
EMIs are not the dead zone people assume. Per HDFC's terms, merchant, brand and aggregator EMI transactions earn the base rate (1.5% on Infinity, 1% on Plus) on the principal — most premium cards give nothing on EMIs. Only lender-side SmartEMI / Dial-an-EMI conversions earn zero.
Expiry. HDFC's terms give NeuCoins a 12-month validity from the end of the month they're credited — its own worked example: coins credited any day in August 2025 are valid until 31 August 2026. So earn and burn within the year.
Excluded categories. No NeuCoins accrue on fuel, rent, government payments, wallet/prepaid loads, voucher or gift-card purchases, card fees and charges, third-party education payments, or online skill-based gaming. Know this before you route a big-ticket spend through the card expecting rewards.
Plus vs Infinity: when to choose which
Choose Plus if:
- Your Tata brand spend is ₹2,000–₹5,000/month
- You want a low-commitment card to capture NeuCoins without a higher fee
- You value the low ₹499 fee (easily waived at ₹1L annual spend)
Choose Infinity if:
- Your Tata brand spend exceeds ₹5,000/month (the 5% vs 2% difference starts compounding fast above this threshold)
- You book Air India / Air India Express flights and want to earn NeuCoins on those bookings
- You spend significantly via UPI and want any rewards on it
Choose neither if:
- You don't shop regularly across Tata brands — a general-purpose cashback card like SBI Cashback or Axis ACE (now closed to new applicants) will earn more on your actual spend mix
- You want airline miles or hotel points — NeuCoins don't transfer to any loyalty program
Quick reference

These cards solve a specific problem well. If you live in the Tata ecosystem, the earn structure is transparent and the redemption value is 1:1, so the modest fee is easy to justify. If you don't, there are better general-purpose earners for the same or lower fee.
