ICICI Bank is one of India's largest private sector banks and its credit card range is broad — covering co-branded, cashback, and premium lifestyle cards across multiple Visa and Mastercard tiers. The key difference between ICICI's programme and competitors like Axis and HSBC is transfer breadth: ICICI Reward Points have exactly one airline partner — Air India's Maharaja Club — and only the two flagship cards convert to it at a rate worth taking. This shapes the ICICI card strategy: for almost every card in the range it is primarily a cashback, portal redemption, and lifestyle benefits ecosystem.

The ICICI card ladder overview

ICICI in real cards: the lifetime-free Amazon Pay earner, Coral and Sapphiro through the middle, up to Emeralde where a point stretches furthest. Judge each rung on its own point value.

`` Entry: Platinum (lifetime free) | Amazon Pay (lifetime free) Mid-entry: Coral (₹500) Mid: Rubyx (₹2,000) Mid-prem: Sapphiro (₹3,500) Premium: Emeralde (₹12,000) Super-prem: Emeralde Private (invite-only) ``

A parallel track: ICICI Amazon Pay (lifetime free) sits outside the standard ladder but is ICICI's most popular card in 2026 — covered separately below.

ICICI Platinum: entry tier

Annual fee: Free or nominal (₹500 for some variants)

Rewards: Basic ICICI Reward Points earn (2 points per ₹100 on most spends)

Benefits: Minimal — basic purchase protection, fuel surcharge waiver on some variants

Positioning: The Platinum is the default entry card for new ICICI bank customers. It serves primarily to establish the credit card relationship; rewards are not the reason to hold this card. Move to Coral once you have 12+ months of history.

ICICI Coral: mid-entry

Annual fee: ₹500 + GST, waived on ₹1.5L annual spend

Rewards: 2 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 (standard) — and note utilities and insurance earn half that, at 1 point per ₹100. There is no accelerated grocery or dining category on this card.

Benefits:

  • 1 complimentary domestic airport lounge visit per quarter, unlocked by ₹75,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter — plus 4 railway lounge visits a year (1 per quarter) with no spend condition
  • BookMyShow movie discount (up to ₹250 off, 2/month on some variants)
  • Fuel surcharge waiver

The Coral positioning: Coral earns at the same 2 points per ₹100 as the Platinum below it, so the step up buys you perks, not a better reward rate. The movie discount is a genuinely useful benefit for frequent cinema-goers, and the quarterly lounge visit is the first real travel perk on the ladder — judge the card on those, not on the earn.

Reward point pitfall: ICICI Reward Points at 2 per ₹100 redeem at approximately ₹0.25–₹0.30 per point — effective reward rate of ~0.5–0.6% on general spend. This is below most cashback cards. ICICI's portfolio strength is in lifestyle benefits and co-branded advantages, not raw reward rate.

ICICI Rubyx: mid-tier with lifestyle bundles

Annual fee: ₹2,000 + GST, waived on ₹3L annual spend

Rewards: Higher earn on specific categories; enhanced portal redemption options

Benefits:

  • Domestic lounge access
  • Golf programme (complimentary rounds at select courses)
  • Enhanced insurance coverage
  • BookMyShow offer continuation

Positioning: Rubyx adds the golf benefit and slightly higher earn rates. It suits ICICI customers who specifically value the golf programme and do not yet qualify for Sapphiro.

ICICI Sapphiro: mid-premium sweet spot

Annual fee: ₹3,500 + GST, waived on ₹6L annual spend

Rewards:

  • 2 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 on general domestic spend
  • 4 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 on international spend — the card's best earn rate
  • 1 point per ₹100 on utilities and insurance

Travel benefits:

  • Priority Pass lounge access — 2 international visits a year, plus 4 domestic visits a quarter unlocked by ₹75,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter
  • Domestic lounge access
  • Comprehensive travel insurance (trip cancellation, baggage, medical)
  • Card-network tier privileges (Mastercard, or RuPay on the RuPay variant)

Lifestyle benefits:

  • Complimentary golf (enhanced from Rubyx)
  • Dining privileges at partner restaurants
  • Concierge service

The Sapphiro case: At ₹6L annual spend (₹50,000/month), the fee is waived. The card's Priority Pass lounge access, insurance, and network-tier privileges (Mastercard, or RuPay on the RuPay variant) make it a solid all-round premium card for ICICI customers. The reward rate (2 points per ₹100 at ₹0.25/point = ~0.5% domestically, doubling to ~1% on international spend) is thin, so the non-reward benefits have to carry the fee here.

Who should hold Sapphiro: ICICI banking customers who want lounge access and a curated lifestyle benefits package, spend ₹5–10L annually, and want to remain within the ICICI ecosystem.

ICICI Emeralde: premium tier

Annual fee: ₹12,000 + GST

Rewards: Enhanced earn rates (6+ points per ₹100 on key categories); Visa Infinite tier

Travel benefits:

  • Priority Pass lounge access (higher allocation than Sapphiro — verify current terms for complimentary visits)
  • Domestic lounge access — comprehensive
  • Lounge access for companion on some visits
  • Full travel insurance suite

Lifestyle benefits:

  • Comprehensive concierge (Visa Infinite)
  • Spa and wellness access
  • Enhanced dining programme
  • Complimentary golf (expanded)

The Emeralde comparison to HDFC Infinia: At ₹12,000 fee, Emeralde is priced close to HDFC Infinia (₹12,500), and lounge access is not the difference between them — Emeralde gives the primary cardholder unlimited domestic and international access, and is the one ICICI card exempt from the bank's ₹75,000-a-quarter lounge spend gate. What separates them is the currency and the invitation: Infinia is invite-only and its Reward Point is worth ₹1 on SmartBuy, while Emeralde's point is ~₹1 only through iShop and ₹0.40 as statement credit. Emeralde is the right card for those committed to the ICICI ecosystem who want Visa Infinite benefits without waiting to be asked.

The reward point pitfalls at every ICICI tier

Pitfall 1: Point-to-value conversion ICICI Reward Points redeem at approximately ₹0.25–₹0.30 per point on most portal redemptions. At 2 points per ₹100 — the standard earn right across the ladder, Coral and Sapphiro alike — the effective rate is 0.5–0.6%. Only Sapphiro's 4 points per ₹100 on international spend reaches ~1%. These are modest rates, not exceptional ones. Never let reward points expire — ICICI points typically expire after 3 years.

Pitfall 2: One transfer partner — and the ratio is the real trap Unlike Axis EDGE Miles (KrisFlyer), HSBC TravelOne (KrisFlyer + Accor), or Amex MR (Marriott + airlines), ICICI Reward Points have exactly one transfer route: Air India's Maharaja Club. What matters is which card you hold. Emeralde Private Metal and Times Black convert 1:1, worth roughly ₹1 a point — four times the catalogue rate, and comfortably the best use those points will ever see. Every other ICICI card converts at 6:1, or about ₹0.17 a point, which is worse than redeeming the same points for vouchers. So on the two flagships the transfer is the play; everywhere else on the ladder, ignore it and use the portal. Transfers need a minimum of 2,000 points and take up to five working days. If broad transfer flexibility is important to your strategy, ICICI is still not the right issuer.

Pitfall 3: Monthly caps on accelerated categories Several ICICI accelerated earn categories have monthly caps that are not prominently advertised. Check the MITC for your specific card variant before planning spend around accelerated categories.

Amazon Pay ICICI: outside the ladder but worth noting

Amazon Pay ICICI sits apart from the standard ICICI ladder — it is a lifetime-free co-branded card with distinct benefits:

  • 5% cashback on Amazon (Prime members)
  • 2% on Amazon Pay merchant transactions
  • 1% on others

For Amazon-centric ICICI customers, this card delivers better practical value than any card in the standard ICICI ladder. It does not have lounge access, but for users who want pure cashback on Amazon at zero cost, it is the right ICICI card.

Reviewed by · Cards tested, miles earned, trips booked — for over a decade

I have spent over a decade on Indian credit cards, mostly for the points and miles. I am a software engineer by profession, I hold and use the cards I write about, and I redeem through airline and hotel transfer partners: Avios, KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Air India Maharaja Club, Accor ALL, Marriott Bonvoy and Taj. What I write about is what a card is actually worth after the fine print, the caps and exclusions that decide the real return, and the changes issuers make quietly. No paid placements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the upgrade path for ICICI Bank credit cards?
ICICI's typical progression is: Platinum (entry, free or low fee) → Coral (mid-entry, ₹500) → Rubyx (mid, ₹2,000) → Sapphiro (mid-premium, ₹3,500) → Emeralde (premium, ₹12,000) → Emeralde Private (invite-only, ultra-premium). Each tier adds lounge access, higher reward rates, and additional lifestyle benefits.
How do ICICI reward points work?
ICICI uses two reward systems: PAYBACK points (for older co-branded cards) and ICICI Reward Points (proprietary) on most current cards. ICICI Reward Points earn at 2–6 points per ₹100 depending on category, and redeem at approximately ₹0.25–₹0.50 per point through the ICICI Rewards portal. Points can be used for merchandise, travel, or statement credit. There is also exactly one transfer route: ICICI Reward Points convert to Air India's Maharaja Club — 1:1 on Emeralde Private Metal and Times Black, but a punishing 6:1 on every other ICICI card, which is worse than simply redeeming them for vouchers.
What annual income is needed for ICICI Emeralde?
ICICI asks salaried applicants for a monthly income of ₹1,50,000 (₹18 lakh a year), and self-employed applicants for ₹18 lakh a year. The card provides Visa Infinite tier benefits, unlimited Priority Pass (verify current terms), and premium lifestyle features. The annual fee of ₹12,000 is high — it is positioned for ICICI Private Banking or wealth management customers.
Is ICICI Sapphiro worth the annual fee?
Sapphiro at ₹3,500 annual fee (waived ₹6L spend) provides a balanced package: good reward earn rates, limited Priority Pass lounge access, domestic lounge coverage, and lifestyle benefits. For ICICI bank customers who want to stay within the ICICI ecosystem and spend ₹5–8L annually, Sapphiro is the right stopping point.
Does ICICI have a transferable miles programme like Axis EDGE?
Not really. ICICI Reward Points have exactly one transfer partner — Air India's Maharaja Club — against the multi-partner line-ups at Axis (EDGE Miles) and HSBC (TravelOne). And the ratio matters more than the existence: Emeralde Private Metal and Times Black transfer 1:1, worth roughly ₹1 a point, but every other ICICI card gets 6:1, which lands near ₹0.17 a point and destroys more value than the portal does. So the transfer is a genuine play on the two flagship cards and a trap on the rest of the ladder. If broad airline or hotel transfer flexibility is what you want, ICICI is still not the right choice.
