Pros and cons

Pros

  • Low Rs. 499 fee for an entry card with a full Paytm ecosystem tie-in
  • 3% on Paytm Mall / Movies / Travel and 2% on other Paytm App spends
  • Complimentary Super Saver Membership (formerly Paytm First)
  • 1% fuel surcharge waiver and cyber fraud insurance cover

Cons

  • No annual-fee waiver, unlike the SELECT variant
  • Value is thin unless most of your spending runs through the Paytm App
  • No lounge access
  • Fuel, wallet loads and (from 9 March 2026) school and education spends earn nothing
  • Nothing under Rs. 100 earns at all — a real limit on a recharge-and-bills card
  • Cashback is now paid as Reward Points (since 1 July 2024)

Quick verdict: The Paytm SBI Card is a simple, low-fee entry card built around one app. It pays 3% on Paytm Mall, Movies and Travel, 2% on other Paytm App spends and 1% on everything else — credited as Reward Points worth Re. 1 each since July 2024. There's no lounge access and no spend-based fee waiver, but at a Rs. 499 fee it's an easy first card if Paytm is genuinely where your money moves.

The reward structure

Everything on this card is organised around the Paytm App:

  • 3% on Paytm Mall, Movies and Travel — the headline rate, and the reason to hold it.
  • 2% on all other Paytm App spends — recharges, bill payments and the like.
  • 1% on any other spend, online or offline.

As with the rest of the Paytm SBI range, the cashback became Reward Points on 1 July 2024 — 1 Reward Point = Re. 1. The rates didn't change; the payout mechanism did. You accumulate points and redeem them against vouchers and the SBI Card catalogue rather than getting instant cashback on your statement.

Fees and the small print

The fee is refreshingly low: Rs. 499 joining and Rs. 499 renewal. But note two limitations honestly:

  • There is no published spend-based fee waiver on this base card — unlike the SELECT (waived at Rs. 2 lakh) or the sibling co-brands. The Rs. 499 renewal simply applies from year two.
  • Spending Rs. 1 lakh a year earns you the Super Saver Membership again on renewal, which is the card's main milestone.

You also get a complimentary Super Saver Membership (SBI's current name for what was Paytm First), cyber fraud insurance cover of Rs. 1,00,000, and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver (transactions Rs. 500–3,000, capped at Rs. 100 a cycle). Wallet loads, fuel, rent, government payments, cash advances and — since 9 March 2026 — school and education spends earn nothing at all. Nor does anything under Rs. 100, which matters on a card built for recharges.

Who it's for

This is a starter card for the Paytm-native user. If you already recharge, pay bills, book movies and shop through Paytm, the 3% and 2% tiers turn spending you were doing anyway into modest, low-friction rewards — and Rs. 499 is a small price for that. For a first-time cardholder inside the Paytm ecosystem, it's an easy, unintimidating entry.

Who should look elsewhere

Be realistic about your Paytm usage. The rewards only shine inside one app; outside it you earn a flat 1%. If your online spending is spread across many platforms, the SBI Cashback card's flat 5% on online shopping will comfortably out-earn this — up to a point, since April 2026 caps that 5% at Rs. 2,000 a month (Rs. 4,000 combined with its offline tier) and excludes gaming, toll and government payments. If you shop mostly on specific online retailers, the SBI SimplyCLICK rewards online spends more broadly.

It's also not a travel card — no lounge access at this tier — and the 3.5% forex markup makes it a poor choice abroad. If you want the Paytm reward tiers plus lounge access and a fee waiver, step up to the Paytm SBI Card SELECT, which lifts Paytm Travel, Movies and Mall to 5% and adds four domestic lounge visits for a Rs. 1,499 fee that waives at Rs. 2 lakh.

The good rate lives inside the Paytm app — and the exclusions moved in 2026

The 3% headline is not a category rate, it is an app rate: it applies to Paytm Mall, Movies and Travel booked on the Paytm app, with other in-app spends at 2%. Everything else — online, offline and UPI alike — earns 1%. That is a respectable floor by entry-card standards, and unusually the 1% covers UPI, which many cards exclude outright. But the difference between 3% and 1% is entirely about where you transact, not what you buy.

Two things narrow it further. Fuel, wallet loads, rent, government payments and cash advances earn nothing, and education spends were removed from earning on 9 March 2026 — a recent cut worth knowing if school or college fees were part of why you picked the card.

The Super Saver membership (formerly Paytm First) arrives on activation and again on each renewal, which makes it a recurring benefit rather than a one-off welcome, and there is ₹1 lakh of cyber-fraud cover. For a ₹499 card whose base rate is a full 1%, the package is fair — provided the Paytm app is genuinely where your spending happens.

The bottom line

The Paytm SBI Card does exactly what an entry co-brand should: low fee, clear rewards, tight ecosystem fit. It won't be anyone's only card for long, and the missing fee waiver is a genuine niggle. But for a Paytm regular who wants a cheap, no-fuss first card that rewards the spending they're already doing, it's a reasonable, honest pick — just don't expect it to reward much of anything outside the Paytm App.

I have spent over a decade on Indian credit cards, mostly for the points and miles. I am a software engineer by profession, I hold and use the cards I write about, and I redeem through airline and hotel transfer partners: Avios, KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Air India Maharaja Club, Accor ALL, Marriott Bonvoy and Taj. What I write about is what a card is actually worth after the fine print, the caps and exclusions that decide the real return, and the changes issuers make quietly. No paid placements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Paytm SBI Card worth it in 2026?
As a low-cost first card for someone who lives inside the Paytm App, yes — 3% on Paytm Mall, Movies and Travel and 2% on other Paytm spends is decent for a Rs. 499 fee. If Paytm is only an occasional app for you, a flat online-cashback card returns more.
Does the Paytm SBI Card still give cashback?
Since 1 July 2024, the cashback was replaced by Reward Points of equivalent value — 1 Reward Point = Re. 1. The rates are unchanged (3% / 2% / 1%); you now redeem points instead of receiving instant cashback.
Is there an annual-fee waiver on the Paytm SBI Card?
No spend-based renewal-fee waiver is published for this base card — the Rs. 499 renewal fee applies from the second year. Spending Rs. 1 lakh a year does get you the Super Saver Membership again on renewal.
Paytm SBI Card or Paytm SBI Card SELECT?
The base card keeps the Paytm reward tiers at Rs. 499 with no lounge. The SELECT costs Rs. 1,499, lifts Paytm Travel, Movies and Mall to 5%, adds four domestic lounge visits a year, and waives its fee at Rs. 2 lakh spend.
