Axis Bank Freecharge Credit Card

The Axis Bank Freecharge Credit Card is a low-key entry card built with Axis Bank's own Freecharge platform, aimed at people who live in the Freecharge app for recharges and bill payments. Unlike the newer Freecharge Plus (which pays flat cashback), the base Freecharge card earns EDGE Reward Points — a modest base earn on general spends, topped up by a monthly spend milestone Axis publishes as a table: nothing below ₹2,000 of spend in a month, 100 points from ₹2,000, and 350 points at ₹5,000 and above. Axis publishes no welcome benefit on this card at all, and no fuel surcharge refund — the Key Fact Sheet names it among the cards where the refund does not apply. Nor does the Key Fact Sheet publish a spend-based fee waiver, so treat the ₹250 as payable; Axis's own fee table does reference a waiver calculation but never states a threshold, and we would rather show you that gap than invent a number. Axis describes the card as invite-only through the Freecharge app, and our own checks found no new issuance, so we show it as paused for new applications; existing holders are unaffected. It is best understood as a light digital card for Freecharge regulars, not a rewards workhorse.

The base Freecharge card is a modest, narrow product: its value is the monthly spend milestone and the Freecharge app convenience, not a strong everyday earn. With no published welcome benefit, no fuel surcharge refund and no stated fee-waiver threshold, the ₹250 is simply a cost. If cashback is what you want, the Freecharge Plus (5% on Freecharge) is the better sibling; if you want a free everyday cashback card, a RuPay/UPI card like the lifetime-free Axis SUPERMONEY will out-earn this — as will the Axis ACE, though its ₹499 fee only waives at ₹2 lakh. Axis calls the card invite-only through the Freecharge app; we found no new issuance, so it is really a card for existing holders now.

New applications paused

If you hold this card: Existing holders keep the card and its benefits exactly as before — only new applications are affected.

Axis stopped presenting this card in its application flow — it is simply no longer offered to new customers. There was no announcement, and the product page still carries an Apply button, which is why you will see this argued both ways: a stale product page is exactly what a quiet sourcing stop looks like.

How we checked — last verified 17 July 2026

Axis publishes no closure notice for this card, so we checked its own credit-card lineup instead. Of the 40 cards Axis lists, 27 carry an “Apply Now” button and 13 don’t — and the 13 are its retired and paused cards, including the AURA, which Axis does openly mark “no longer available”. This card is in that group: Axis shows it a “Know More” button and no way to apply, while the cards it still sources keep theirs.

We re-check this and will lift the notice as soon as the card is open to new applicants again. If you find it back on the issuer's application flow before we do, tell us — a human reads everything.

The concern

The earn is thin and reward-point based rather than cashback, and Axis never publishes a spend denominator for the base rate — its own page says only "You get 1 EDGE REWARD Point". Treat the point values as indicative, and lean on the Freecharge Plus if you want a defined cashback rate.

Frequently asked questions

Does it give cashback or reward points?
It earns EDGE Reward Points — a modest base earn topped up by a monthly spend milestone that Axis publishes as a table (nothing below ₹2,000 of spend in a month, 100 points from ₹2,000, and 350 points at ₹5,000 and above), rather than flat cashback. In effective-return terms this card's best everyday earn is 0.2% on everyday spends — percentages here are the real return after converting points at their card-specific value, not the headline points-per-₹100. Figures as of October 2026.
How is it different from the Freecharge Plus?
The base Freecharge card is reward-point based; the Freecharge Plus is the cashback version (5% on Freecharge, 2% on Ola/Uber, 1% elsewhere). Pick Plus if you want defined cashback.
What is the fee, and is it waived?
A ₹250 joining fee and a ₹250 annual fee from the second year. Axis publishes no waiver threshold for this card — its Key Fact Sheet leaves the cell blank, and while the fee table does mention that rent and wallet loads would not count towards a waiver calculation, no spend figure is stated anywhere. The ₹50,000 threshold you may have seen quoted belongs to the Freecharge Plus. The renewal fee is ₹250 plus 18% GST — ₹295 all-in, which is the figure that actually hits the statement. Figures as of October 2026.
What is the welcome benefit?
None. Axis publishes no welcome benefit on the base Freecharge card — its features are the regular reward earn, the monthly milestone and "special offers". The ₹700 voucher sometimes attributed to this card is the Freecharge Plus's, and Axis withdrew it for cards issued on or after 4 January 2023.
How will Axis apply my payment across the outstanding balance from 28 August 2026?
From 28 August 2026 Axis clears a credit card payment in this order — fees and charges including taxes, then EMIs, then interest charges, then purchase transactions, and cash advances last. That swaps the final two: the order it replaced cleared cash advances fourth and purchases last. It only bites if you pay less than the full statement balance, because a part-payment now settles purchases before it reaches a cash advance — and Axis charges interest on a cash advance from the day of withdrawal, with no interest-free period, so the costliest balance is the one left outstanding longest. Paying the statement balance in full makes the order irrelevant.

2026

  1. ▼ FeeObserved 29 Jul 2026 · Effective 28 Aug 2026

Dynamic currency conversion markup more than doubles to 3.5%

    1.5% + GST→3.5% + GST

Axis Bank raised the dynamic currency conversion mark-up from 1.5% to 3.5% plus GST. DCC applies when an overseas merchant offers to bill you in rupees instead of the local currency, and it stacks on top of the usual foreign-currency mark-up. Declining the rupee option at the terminal and paying in the local currency avoids the charge entirely.

  2. ▼ FeeObserved 29 Jul 2026 · Effective 28 Aug 2026

New top late-payment slab of Rs 1,300 above Rs 50,000

Rs 1,200 on any total payment due above Rs 10,000→Rs 1,200 from Rs 10,001 to Rs 50,000; Rs 1,300 above Rs 50,000

Axis Bank added a fifth late-payment slab. Everything up to Rs 50,000 is unchanged, but a total payment due of more than Rs 50,000 now attracts Rs 1,300 instead of Rs 1,200. The same notice fixes the order in which a payment is applied to the outstanding: fees and charges including taxes first, then EMIs, interest, purchases and cash advances.

  3. ▼ RewardObserved 29 Jul 2026 · Effective 28 Aug 2026

Tolls and road fees stop earning rewards; gift cards split into their own category

Bridge fees, road fees and tolls earned at the normal rate→No rewards or cashback on bridge fees, road fees and tolls

Axis Bank added bridge fees, road fees and tolls to the spends that earn nothing. Separately, gift card purchases move out of the Wallet spend category into a new Gift Card category; they already earned no rewards, and they continue to be excluded from spend-based fee waivers and milestone thresholds.

2025

  1. ▼ RedemptionEffective 1 Oct 2025

EDGE points can be forfeited on card closure or overdue

No published forfeiture window→Forfeitable 30 days after closure, or if minimum due is unpaid beyond 90 days

Effective 1 October 2025 Axis reserved the right to forfeit unredeemed EDGE REWARD Points and EDGE Miles 30 days after a Freecharge card is closed, or if the minimum amount due stays outstanding for more than 90 days. The same notice urges cardholders to redeem within 30 days of closure. The identical clause landed on the MyZone and other Axis cards in the same revision.

  2. ◆ RewardEffective 20 Jun 2025

Reward-earn exclusions move from MCC to spend-category

Excluded spends identified by 4-digit Merchant Category Code→Same spends identified by named spend category

Effective 20 June 2025 Axis stopped identifying reward-excluded spends on the Freecharge card by raw 4-digit MCC and began using named spend categories instead — Rent, Wallet load, Gold & Jewellery, Fuel, Financial Institutions, Cash advances and Repayments for reward earn, and Rent and Wallet load for the spend-based fee waiver calculation. Axis states the excluded categories themselves are unchanged, so this is a detection-method change rather than a rate cut. Note that EMI is absent from the list for this card, though Axis does exclude it on the Freecharge Plus.
