Pros and cons
Pros
- RuPay card that links to UPI, so PhonePe scan-and-pay spends still earn Reward Points
- 3% value back on PhonePe App spends and 2% on other online spends
- Low Rs. 499 fee, reversed on Rs. 1 lakh of annual spend
- Rs. 500 welcome PhonePe gift card and a Rs. 3,000 Yatra milestone voucher
Cons
- July 2026 devaluation: PhonePe and online spends both cut from 1,000 to 750 RP/month (insurance sub-capped 250), other spends capped 1,000 RP/month
- No reward points at all on transactions under Rs. 100 — a real limit on a recharge-and-bills card
- Exclusions from Jul 2026 — tolls, gifts, jewellery, education, and utility/insurance/UPI outside PhonePe earn no points
- Best value needs your bills, recharges and payments routed through PhonePe
- No lounge access at this tier (that sits on the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT Black)
- Reward Points are worth Re. 1 each, so the top rate is an effective 3%, not more
- 3.5% forex markup makes it a poor card abroad
Quick verdict: The PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE is the cheaper of the two PhonePe co-brands — a Rs. 499 RuPay card that links to UPI and pays 3 Reward Points per Rs. 100 on PhonePe App spends, 2 on other online spends and 1 elsewhere, each point worth Re. 1. The fee reverses at Rs. 1 lakh of annual spend. If PhonePe is where you pay bills, recharge and scan-to-pay, it's a tidy, low-cost rewards card. Just don't expect lounge access at this tier.
Why the RuPay-on-UPI angle matters
The single most useful thing about this card is easy to miss: it's a RuPay card that can be linked to UPI. Most reward credit cards in India earn nothing when you pay by UPI QR code — the rewards simply don't apply. Here, eligible PhonePe App and scan-and-pay spends keep earning Reward Points. For anyone whose real-world spending is mostly UPI, that closes a gap that traditional Visa/Mastercard reward cards leave open.
What it earns
The reward tiers are straightforward, and every point is worth Re. 1:
- 3 Reward Points per Rs. 100 (~3%) on eligible PhonePe App spends — bills, recharges, UPI payments — capped at 750 RP a month, with insurance sub-capped at 250 RP a month. Note what that means: 750 points is the ceiling on Rs. 25,000 of PhonePe spend a month, not Rs. 33,000. Nothing under Rs. 100 earns at all.
- 2 Reward Points per Rs. 100 (~2%) on other eligible online spends, capped at 750 RP a month.
- 1 Reward Point per Rs. 100 (~1%) on everything else, capped at 1,000 RP a month.
Read those caps carefully, because they do most of the work. The 3% tier stops paying after about Rs. 25,000 of PhonePe spend in a month and the 2% online tier after about Rs. 37,500 — beyond that you are earning nothing on the accelerated categories. Both caps arrived in a 1 July 2026 devaluation, which also excluded tolls, gifts and vouchers, jewellery, education fees, and any utility, insurance or UPI payment routed outside the PhonePe app. That last exclusion is the sharpest one: it converts the card's headline convenience into a condition, since the same bill paid through a different app earns zero.
The 1-point-equals-Re.-1 structure is still refreshingly literal — there's no inflated point value to unwind, and points redeem against a wide array of vouchers, or for cash/statement value, which is more flexible than the Apollo or some other SBI co-brands that lock redemption to one ecosystem. But do not mistake a transparent point value for a stable one: SBI has already cut this card's caps once, and the ceiling, not the rate, is where the next trim will land.
Fees and welcome benefits
- Rs. 499 joining and Rs. 499 renewal, with the renewal fee reversed on Rs. 1 lakh of annual spend — a genuinely low bar (about Rs. 8,400 a month).
- A Rs. 500 PhonePe gift card as a welcome benefit — about 85% of the Rs. 589 all-in first-year fee (Rs. 499 + GST).
- A Yatra voucher worth Rs. 3,000 on annual spends of Rs. 3 lakh as a milestone.
- A 1% fuel surcharge waiver (transactions Rs. 500–3,000, capped at Rs. 100 a cycle).
Who it's for
This card suits the PhonePe-native everyday spender — someone who pays utility bills, recharges and merchants through the app and pays a lot by UPI. For that person, the 3% tier plus UPI eligibility means their normal payments quietly earn back real value, and the Rs. 1 lakh fee reversal is easy to clear. It's also a sensible first RuPay card for anyone who wants UPI-linked rewards without a big annual fee.
Who should look elsewhere
If your online shopping is broad and platform-agnostic — Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, direct D2C sites — a flat online-cashback card like the SBI Cashback will out-earn the PURPLE's 2% online tier on that spend. And if you want airport lounge access and richer travel benefits, this isn't the card: those sit on the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT Black, the higher-fee sibling with the same PhonePe reward logic plus lounge perks. The PURPLE deliberately trades those away for a lower fee.
It's also a poor choice for international spends — the 3.5% forex markup is standard-issue expensive — and the top rate genuinely caps at an effective 3%, so heavy spenders chasing maximum return elsewhere won't find a hidden gear here. Worse for them, the monthly RP ceilings mean the card actively stops rewarding volume: past roughly Rs. 25,000 of PhonePe spend and Rs. 37,500 of other online spend in a cycle, extra spending earns nothing at all in those tiers.
The bottom line
The PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE nails a specific brief: a cheap, UPI-linked RuPay card that rewards the everyday payments most cards ignore, with transparent 1-point-equals-1-rupee value and a fee that's easy to wipe out. The July 2026 caps and exclusions have narrowed that brief — both accelerated tiers now stop at 750 RP a month, and anything routed outside the PhonePe app earns nothing — so price it as a modest, capped rebate on routine bills rather than an open-ended 3% card. Within those limits, if PhonePe is your default payments app, it's still an easy yes. If you want lounge access or broad online value, step up to the SELECT Black or pair this with a flat-cashback card — and let each do what it's best at.
