RuPay is the only credit-card network in India that can be linked to UPI. That single fact — not rewards, not lounges — is why RuPay credit cards matter in 2026: they let you pay by scanning a QR code, from PhonePe or Google Pay, and still earn credit-card rewards on spends that used to come straight out of your bank balance.
But there is a trap in almost every "best RuPay card" list, and it is worth stating up front before any recommendation.
The UPI earn trap
The headline rate on a credit card and the rate you actually earn on a UPI-QR payment are often two different numbers.
Most RuPay cards earn their base rate on UPI-QR payments to physical merchants, not their accelerated category rate. The SBI Cashback (RuPay) is the cleanest example: it pays 5% on online spends — capped at ₹2,000/month, and excluding gaming, toll and government payments since April 2026 — but a UPI-QR payment at your local kirana store earns the 1% offline rate, not 5%. The RuPay rail buys you the convenience of paying by UPI from a credit line — it does not magically upgrade every QR scan to the card's best rate.
There are exceptions, and they are the cards built specifically for UPI:
- The Axis SUPERMONEY pays 3% — but only on QR scan-and-pay through the super.money app, and that 3% is now capped at 1× the base cashback you earn each cycle (the 1% base itself is uncapped since January 2026).
- The Fibe Axis Bank card pays 3% on food delivery, entertainment and local commute, capped at ₹1,500 a cycle.
So the real question is never "what's the highest number on the brochure" — it's "what do I actually earn on the way I actually pay." With that lens, here is the 2026 map.
Best lifetime-free RuPay card for UPI cashback: Axis SUPERMONEY
If you want a free card that pays you to scan QR codes, this is the one to beat. The Axis SUPERMONEY is lifetime-free (no joining or annual fee) and earns 3% cashback on QR scan-and-pay through the super.money app, with 1% on everything else. Since 1 January 2026 the old flat ₹500-per-statement-cycle cashback cap is gone: the 1% base is now uncapped, and the accelerated 3% is capped at 1× the base cashback you earn that cycle. A 1% fuel surcharge waiver rounds it out.
The honest framing: because the 3% is capped at 1× your base earn and only applies to QR scans in the super.money app, it works best as a top-up rather than a primary card — route your spends elsewhere and you are on the (now uncapped) 1%. But for ₹0 a year, paying you 3% to scan QR codes, it is the strongest free UPI cashback card going.
A close cousin is the Fibe Axis Bank card — also lifetime-free, India's first "numberless" card, paying 3% on food delivery, entertainment and local cabs (₹1,500/cycle cap) and 1% elsewhere, plus up to four domestic lounge visits a year. It is currently offered to Fibe app customers only, so availability is gated.
Best RuPay card for the everyday spend basket: HSBC RuPay Cashback
If your statement is dining, food delivery and groceries, the HSBC RuPay Cashback pays 10% on that basket (under a ₹400/month cap) plus 1% on everything else, and — unusually for a sub-₹500 card — adds airport lounge access. Read that last one carefully: HSBC's product page (August 2026) sets it at 2 domestic visits a quarter plus 2 international a year, so up to 10, while HSBC's own February 2026 service guide states only 4 a year, one per quarter. Confirm your entitlement with HSBC before you count on the higher number. The fee is ₹499, waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spend.
It is the UPI sibling of the HSBC Live+: a tighter cap (₹400 vs ₹1,200) and a lower base (1% vs 1.5%) than the Visa Live+, but it adds lounges and the RuPay/UPI rail. For a lighter spender who values UPI-on-credit and a few lounge visits, it earns its place.
For a no-fee HSBC option, the HSBC RuPay Platinum is lifetime-free with a fuel surcharge waiver (worth up to ₹3,000/year) and JCB acceptance abroad — but the base earn is a thin 2 reward points per ₹150 (~0.33%), so take it for the free perks and UPI, not the rewards.
The "twins": pick RuPay if you want UPI
A lot of mainstream cards now ship on both Visa and RuPay with identical rewards and fees — the only difference is the rail. If you want UPI, take the RuPay version; the card is otherwise the same.
| Card (RuPay version) | Fee | What it earns | The UPI note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Cashback (RuPay) | ₹999 (waived ₹2 lakh) | 5% on online spends, capped ₹2,000/month | UPI-QR to shops earns the 1% offline rate; gaming, toll and government excluded |
| SBI SimplySAVE (RuPay) | ₹499 (waived ₹1 lakh) | 10X (~1.7%) on dining, groceries, movies | no documented UPI rate — assume the base rate applies, as on every other card here |
| ICICI Coral (RuPay) | ₹500 (waived ₹1.5 lakh) | 2 RP/₹100 (~0.5%) + movie/lounge perks | perks gated behind quarterly spend |
| ICICI Rubyx (RuPay) | ₹2,000 (waived ₹3 lakh) | ~0.5% base + lounges | single-network — drops the Visa+Amex dual companion |
| ICICI HPCL Super Saver (RuPay) | ₹500 (waived ₹1.5 lakh) | ~5% on HPCL fuel + 5% grocery | best for HPCL-side drivers |
| Airtel Axis (RuPay) | ₹500 (waived ₹2 lakh) | 25% Airtel Thanks app (capped at 2× your base cashback that cycle, ≈₹3,800/yr), 10% Zomato/Blinkit/District, 1% base | earns 1% on UPI — the Visa version can't do UPI at all |
The one to read carefully is the ICICI Rubyx (RuPay): the Visa version's headline is its dual Visa+Amex companion (two lounge programmes). The RuPay version is single-network, so you trade that dual-network trick for UPI convenience.
The twin list keeps growing as issuers add the rail: the Kotak League and Bank of Baroda's Eterna, Tiara and Premier now all ship a RuPay version at the same fee and rewards as their Visa/Mastercard originals, and AU has put LIT, Vetta and Zenith on RuPay too. Two premium twins are worth a caveat: the Axis Magnus (RuPay) caps EDGE earning on UPI at ₹50,000 a month, and the RBL World Safari (RuPay) drops the complimentary Golf Concierge that only the Mastercard version keeps. In every case the rule is the same: the RuPay rail buys you UPI, not a better rate.
Best RuPay co-brands: rail and fuel
- Frequent train travel: the IRCTC BOBCARD (RuPay) earns up to ~10% value-back on IRCTC railway ticket bookings, adds up to four railway lounge visits a year and a railway transaction surcharge waiver, for a ₹500 joining + ₹350 annual fee. Outside IRCTC bookings the earn is ordinary (~0.5%), so its value tracks how much you travel by rail.
- HPCL fuel: the ICICI HPCL Super Saver (RuPay), above, is the best RuPay fuel card if you refuel at HP pumps.
For a simple everyday RuPay rewards card from Bank of Baroda, the BOBCARD Select (₹750, waived ₹70k; ~1% on dining and online) and BOBCARD Easy (₹500, waived ₹35k; ~1% on movies, groceries and departmental stores) both link to UPI, though BoB's ₹0.20 point value keeps the real return around 1%.
The UPI-first fintech cards
A newer category is built for UPI from the ground up — app-issued RuPay cards from fintechs, usually lifetime-free, that pay cashback on QR-code scans:
- Kiwi (issued by YES Bank, AU Small Finance Bank or PNB; Kiwi assigns the bank) — lifetime-free, instant in-app issuance, ~1.5% on scan-and-pay made through the Kiwi app (Kiwi pays nothing on UPI through other apps); the headline "up to ~5%" needs the paid Kiwi Neon tier (₹999 + GST a year, offered only to select YES and AU cardholders) and spend milestones.
- slice — lifetime-free (you open a slice savings account first), ~1% on everyday scans, zero forex on international online shopping — though international spends are excluded from earning, so you save the markup and get nothing back on the transaction — and a built-in pay-in-3 instalment option. Since its small-finance-bank merger it reports to CIBIL, making it one of the better first cards for building credit.
- Jupiter Edge+ — a digital-first RuPay card on the Jupiter app, for fintech users who want accelerated rewards on partner brands. Rewards come only on UPI paid through the Jupiter app, and since October 2026 the 10% brand rate needs more than ₹15,000 of spend in the statement cycle (1% below that).
- Scapia (issued by Federal Bank, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank; every bank pairs a Visa or Mastercard card with a RuPay edition) — lifetime-free with zero forex, lounge access and 4% in Scapia coins on travel booked in-app; the standout free RuPay card for young international travellers.
Judge these on their base earn (~1%), not the advertised "up to 3–5%" — that top rate usually needs a paid tier or large balances. Their real draw is convenience: instant issuance and a pure scan-to-pay UPI experience, for free.
How to link a RuPay credit card to UPI
- Open your UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or BHIM).
- Go to Payment methods → Add credit card → RuPay credit card.
- Select your bank, verify with the OTP, and set a UPI PIN for the card.
- Pay any UPI-QR or UPI ID from the card, up to the standard ₹1 lakh/day UPI limit (lower for the first 24 hours after linking on some banks).
Several issuers run a one-time "link and transact" cashback (commonly ₹250) when you add the card to UPI and make a couple of qualifying transactions — worth claiming when you set it up.
The bottom line
RuPay credit cards are not a separate, better breed of card — they are the only cards you can pay UPI with, and that is the whole point. Choose on this order:
- Want free UPI cashback? Axis SUPERMONEY (or Fibe, if you're a Fibe customer).
- Heavy dining/delivery/grocery basket? HSBC RuPay Cashback (10%, plus lounges).
- Already eyeing a mainstream card that comes in both rails? Take the RuPay twin so you can pay by UPI — just remember the accelerated rate usually applies to the card's normal categories, while UPI-QR to a shop earns the base rate.
- A specific co-brand spend (rail, HPCL fuel)? The IRCTC BOBCARD or ICICI HPCL RuPay.
And always check what you earn on the way you actually pay — on UPI, the base rate is the number that usually matters.
Most of the UPI-first names here come from app-based issuers rather than bank branches; the fintech-card lineup tracks that whole segment — Scapia, Kiwi, Jupiter, OneCard and the rest — in one place.
Confirm current fees and reward rates on the issuer's site before applying — RuPay/UPI reward terms have changed frequently through 2025–2026.
