Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card

The Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card is a co-brand launched in December 2025 between Axis Bank and Google Pay, issued on the RuPay network and linked to UPI so you can pay by scanning any QR code from the Google Pay app. It is lifetime-free, and the welcome reward is a ₹250 gift card plus 250 stars. Rewards come as "stars," each worth ₹1 and redeemable 1:1 against UPI payments in Google Pay. Axis's contractual rate is 1 star per ₹500 spent — 0.2% — doubling to 2 stars per ₹500, or 0.4%, in any cycle following one in which you spent at least ₹100. Since almost every holder clears ₹100, 0.4% is the honest standing rate. The headline 4X and 8X tiers are a different animal: they turn on ₹15,000 and ₹30,000 of spend in the CURRENT reward period, not the previous one, and Axis states plainly that they are offered by Google Pay directly as a promotional campaign that Google may change at will — so they are not contractual and we do not bank them. Stars are capped at 1,500 per reward cycle (the 16th to the 15th), of which Axis funds at most 750. Stars are earned on fuel, unusually for a RuPay card, and expire a year after they are issued.

Entry tier
Google Pay Flex is an easy free card to hold if Google Pay is already your default: no fee, UPI convenience, and stars you can spend straight back through the app. But price it at what Axis actually commits to — 0.2% rising to 0.4%, capped at 1,500 stars a cycle. The 4X and 8X rates that carry the marketing are a Google Pay promotion on current-period spend, disclaimed by Axis and revocable, so treat them as a bonus rather than a reason to hold the card. It is a light, convenient secondary card, not a rewards engine.

Should you get it?

Pros & cons

✓ Pros

  • Lifetime free, with a ₹250 gift card plus 250 stars as the welcome reward
  • RuPay + UPI — pay by scanning QR codes from Google Pay
  • Stars are earned on fuel too, which most cards zero-rate
  • Stars redeem 1:1 straight into UPI payments, with flexible full-pay or EMI repayment

✕ Cons

  • Modest earn — 1 star per ₹500 (0.2%), doubling to 0.4% once you spend ₹100 in a cycle, and capped at 1,500 stars per cycle
  • The headline 4X/8X rates are a Google Pay promotional campaign on current-period spend, not contractual terms — Axis disclaims them and Google can change them at will
  • Axis funds at most 750 of the 1,500 stars a cycle; the rest rides on that promotion
  • Rent, wallet loads, cash, financial-institution payments, insurance, education, government payments and jewellery earn no rewards, and stars on EMI conversions are reversed (fuel does earn)

The concern

The contractual earn is 0.2%, reaching 0.4% only when you spent ₹100 in the prior cycle, and stops entirely at 1,500 stars a cycle. The 4X/8X rates the card is marketed on are a Google Pay promotional campaign that Axis explicitly disclaims and Google can withdraw at any time.

Frequently asked questions

What network is it on and can I use it on UPI?
It is issued on the RuPay network and is UPI-linked, so you can pay by scanning QR codes from the Google Pay app without swiping a physical card.
How do the rewards work?
You earn "stars," each worth ₹1, redeemable 1:1 against UPI payments in Google Pay. Axis's contractual rate is 1 star per ₹500 spent (0.2%), doubling to 2 stars per ₹500 (0.4%) in any cycle that follows one in which you spent ₹100 or more. You can earn at most 1,500 stars in a reward cycle, of which Axis funds up to 750. Stars expire one year after they are issued. In effective-return terms this card's best everyday earn is 0.4% on everyday spends (rewards capped at ₹1,500 a month in that category) — percentages here are the real return after converting points at their card-specific value, not the headline points-per-₹100. Figures as of October 2026.
What about the 4X and 8X star rates?
They are real, but they are not Axis's terms. Unlocking 4X needs more than ₹15,000 of spend in the current reward period and 8X more than ₹30,000 — the current period, not the previous one. Axis states these incremental earnings are offered by Google Pay directly as a promotional campaign, subject to change as Google sees fit. Hold the card for the 0.4%; treat 4X and 8X as a bonus that can be withdrawn.
Is it lifetime free?
Yes — it is a lifetime-free card with no joining or annual fee. The welcome reward is a ₹250 gift card plus 250 stars in the Google Pay app, worth ₹500 together.
Do fuel spends earn stars?
Yes. Axis states stars are earned on all eligible spends including fuel, which is unusual — most cards zero-rate fuel. Rent, wallet loads, cash withdrawals, financial institution payments, insurance, education, government payments, card fees and jewellery/watch stores earn nothing, and stars on anything you convert to EMI are reversed.
How will Axis apply my payment across the outstanding balance from 28 August 2026?
From 28 August 2026 Axis clears a credit card payment in this order — fees and charges including taxes, then EMIs, then interest charges, then purchase transactions, and cash advances last. That swaps the final two: the order it replaced cleared cash advances fourth and purchases last. It only bites if you pay less than the full statement balance, because a part-payment now settles purchases before it reaches a cash advance — and Axis charges interest on a cash advance from the day of withdrawal, with no interest-free period, so the costliest balance is the one left outstanding longest. Paying the statement balance in full makes the order irrelevant.

Dynamic currency conversion markup more than doubles to 3.5%

    1.5% + GST→3.5% + GST

Axis Bank raised the dynamic currency conversion mark-up from 1.5% to 3.5% plus GST. DCC applies when an overseas merchant offers to bill you in rupees instead of the local currency, and it stacks on top of the usual foreign-currency mark-up. Declining the rupee option at the terminal and paying in the local currency avoids the charge entirely.

Axis Bank added a fifth late-payment slab. Everything up to Rs 50,000 is unchanged, but a total payment due of more than Rs 50,000 now attracts Rs 1,300 instead of Rs 1,200. The same notice fixes the order in which a payment is applied to the outstanding: fees and charges including taxes first, then EMIs, interest, purchases and cash advances.
