ICICI Bank Expressions Credit Card

A customisable-design starter card: you pick the card face, and it earns 3 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 on retail (~0.75% at ₹0.25/point) — a touch better than the 2-point Coral. It carries the usual ICICI starter kit for a ₹499 fee that waives at ₹1.5 lakh, but the lounge and movie perks now sit behind ₹75,000 and ₹25,000 quarterly spend gates, and ICICI's free Amazon Pay card still out-earns it for most people.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Customisable card design
  • 3 reward points per ₹100 on retail — better base than the Coral
  • Low ₹499 fee that waives at ₹1.5 lakh

Cons

  • Base earn is ~0.75% — modest, though better than the Coral's 2 points
  • Lounge and movie perks gated behind ₹75,000 and ₹25,000 of quarterly spend
  • Utility, insurance and grocery spend stops earning past ₹40k/₹40k/₹20k a statement cycle
  • The free Amazon Pay ICICI out-earns it for most people

Quick verdict: The Expressions is ICICI's design-your-own starter card — you pick the card face, and it earns a touch more than the Coral: 3 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 on retail (~0.75% at ₹0.25/point) for a ₹499 fee that waives at ₹1.5 lakh. The custom design is the genuine draw. But the lounge and movie perks carry the same 2026 spend gates as the rest of the ICICI starter range, and the bank's own lifetime-free Amazon Pay card still out-earns it for most people.

The Expressions sits alongside the Coral as one of ICICI's entry cards, and its pitch is personalisation: rather than a fixed bank design, you choose the card's face from a library of templates — zodiac, sport, travel and the rest — or upload your own image, at no extra cost. It's a small pleasure, and for some people a real one. Underneath the picture, though, it's a conventional ICICI starter card, and the 2026 ICICI-wide devaluation touched it just as it touched the rest of the range.

What it offers

The Expressions earns like the entry card it is, with one advantage over the Coral:

  • 3 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 (≈0.75% at ₹0.25/point) on retail spends — a slightly stronger base

than the Coral's 2 points — and 1 RP per ₹100 on utilities and insurance.

  • A personalised card face — choose a design template or upload your own image, free of charge.
  • 1 domestic airport lounge visit per quarter (spend-gated — see below).
  • A BookMyShow / INOX movie offer — 25% off up to ₹100, twice a month (now spend-gated).
  • A 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions of ₹400–₹4,000 at HPCL pumps, on up to ₹50,000 of fuel

spend a statement cycle. Fuel itself earns no points.

  • A ₹499 fee, conditionally waived at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend.

For a first-time cardholder who likes the idea of a card that looks like theirs, it's an inoffensive, low-cost introduction to ICICI's ecosystem — and its 3-point base does make it a marginally better everyday earner than the Coral.

The economics — and the spend gates

The honest picture is that the base earn, while better than the Coral's, is still modest. Three points per ₹100 at ₹0.25 a point is about 0.75% on retail, and just 0.25% on utilities and insurance. That's a gentle return, and fuel — which earns nothing beyond the surcharge waiver — sits outside it entirely.

It is also a capped return. Since 15 November 2024 ICICI has limited the spend that accrues points at all, per statement cycle:

CategorySpend that earns per cyclePoints at the Expressions' rate
Utility bills₹40,000400
Insurance premiums₹40,000400
Grocery & departmental stores₹20,000600

Past those lines the category stops earning until the next cycle. Groceries are the one that stings: they earn at the full 3-point retail rate, but only on the first ₹20,000 a month.

Then there are the 2026 gates, which hit exactly the perks people notice:

  • Domestic lounge access is spend-gated: you need ₹75,000 of spend in a calendar quarter to earn the

following quarter's single lounge visit.

  • The movie benefit is spend-gated (15 Jan 2026 revision; first gated quarter Apr-Jun 2026): the BookMyShow / INOX offer now requires

₹25,000 of spend in the preceding quarter to stay active.

The tension is familiar across ICICI's starter range: a starter card's perks now require non-starter spending. A ₹75,000-quarterly threshold for one lounge visit is a lot for the light spender the Expressions is built for, and many holders will simply never clear it — at which point the lounge benefit quietly disappears.

The free card that out-earns it

The most useful thing to know before you pay ₹499 is that ICICI offers a better, free card for most people: the Amazon Pay ICICI card is lifetime-free and out-earns the Expressions for typical spending — comfortably so if you shop on Amazon. So unless you specifically value the custom card face and the slightly higher base earn, the free Amazon Pay card is the smarter first ICICI card. The Expressions' fee buys you a nicer-looking card and one extra point per ₹100; whether that's worth ₹499 a year is a genuine question, and for most spenders the answer is no.

Who should hold it

The Expressions makes sense for the first-time ICICI customer who genuinely values the personalised design and wants a marginally better base earn than the Coral — someone who'll spend enough (₹75,000+ a quarter) to keep the lounge live, and who treats the custom face as part of the appeal rather than an afterthought. As a low-fee on-ramp into ICICI, with a view to upgrading toward a card like the Rubyx later, it's perfectly reasonable.

It's the wrong card for the light spender — the spend gates lock away the lounge and movie perks — and for anyone whose main goal is rewards, where the free Amazon Pay ICICI does more for nothing.

The bottom line

The ICICI Expressions is a likeable low-fee starter card, and its design-your-own hook is a real, if small, point of difference. The 3-points-per-₹100 base (~0.75%) edges the Coral, and at ₹499 waived on ₹1.5 lakh the cost of holding is low. But the perks carry the same 2026 spend gates — ₹75,000 a quarter for the lounge, ₹25,000 for the movie offer — that put the best benefits out of reach for the very spenders a starter card targets, the bill and grocery categories stop earning past ₹40k/₹40k/₹20k a statement cycle, and ICICI's own free Amazon Pay card out-earns it for most people. Buy it if you value the personalised face and the slightly higher base earn; otherwise, the free Amazon Pay ICICI is the better first ICICI card.

I have spent over a decade on Indian credit cards, mostly for the points and miles. I am a software engineer by profession, I hold and use the cards I write about, and I redeem through airline and hotel transfer partners: Avios, KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Air India Maharaja Club, Accor ALL, Marriott Bonvoy and Taj. What I write about is what a card is actually worth after the fine print, the caps and exclusions that decide the real return, and the changes issuers make quietly. No paid placements.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the ICICI Expressions card different?
The hook is the card face: you personalise it with your own image or one of ICICI's design templates, at no extra cost. Underneath, it's a standard ICICI starter card that earns 3 Reward Points per ₹100 on retail — a touch more than the 2-point Coral — for a ₹499 fee.
What does the ICICI Expressions earn?
3 ICICI Reward Points per ₹100 on retail spends and 1 RP per ₹100 on utilities and insurance. Points are worth about ₹0.25 each, so retail earns roughly 0.75% and utilities roughly 0.25%. Fuel earns no points.
ICICI Expressions or Amazon Pay ICICI — which should I get?
For most people, the free Amazon Pay ICICI: it's lifetime-free and out-earns the Expressions for typical spending, especially on Amazon. Choose the Expressions only if you specifically want the personalised card face and the slightly higher base earn, and will clear the spend gates to keep the perks.
Does the ICICI Expressions have lounge access?
One domestic airport lounge visit per quarter, but it's spend-gated: you must spend ₹75,000 in a calendar quarter to unlock the following quarter's visit. For the light spender a starter card targets, that bar is often out of reach.
What is the annual fee on the ICICI Expressions?
₹499, conditionally waived at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend. It's a low cost of holding, but that fee buys a base earn of only about 0.75% and perks that carry 2026 spend gates.
Are ICICI Expressions reward points capped?
Yes. Since 15 November 2024 ICICI caps the spend that earns at all: ₹40,000 a statement cycle on utility bills, ₹40,000 on insurance and ₹20,000 on groceries and departmental stores. At the Expressions' rates that is 400, 400 and 600 points, after which those categories earn nothing for the rest of the cycle.
