If you hold this card: Existing Platinum Travel holders keep the card and its milestone rewards — only direct new applications are paused.
American Express is not accepting new card applications in India. Its own card pages carry the notice: “We are temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as we make planned updates to our technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations.” The pause began in March 2025; the Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve reopened in September 2025 but closed again in August 2026, so the whole American Express India line-up is now shut to new applicants.
You cannot apply directly, and the usual route in — take the Platinum Reserve, then request a product change — is closed too: the Reserve stopped accepting new applications in August 2026 along with the rest of the Amex India line-up.
Last checked 5 September 2026 against the issuer's own page. We re-check this and will lift the notice as soon as the card is open to new applicants again.
In-depth review
American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card
Still the travel card for people who hate the games — hit clear milestones, collect guaranteed vouchers, no portal pricing or transfer ratios. But two devaluations in 2026 moved the whole proposition up to ₹7 lakh of spend: the ₹1.9 lakh tier now pays nothing, ₹4 lakh pays 10,000 points, and the anchoring Taj card — doubled to ₹20,000 — sits at the top. Worth it at ₹7 lakh a year if you will spend at Taj; below ₹4 lakh it makes no sense. Amex has paused new applications in India, so for now this is a card to hold rather than one to apply for.

Pros & cons
✓ Pros
- 10,000 bonus MR points at ₹4L annual spend — the one predictable points milestone left after the 10 Sep 2026 cut
- A ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-Gift Card at ₹7L spend — the richest tier, doubled from ₹10,000 on 10 Sep 2026 (it replaced 22,500 MR points, so it is Taj credit rather than transferable currency)
- 3X MR points on e-vouchers bought via ShopWise (Reward Multiplier's brand links close 30 Sep 2026)
- Amex service + MR transfer partner access for Marriott, KrisFlyer and Star Alliance redemptions
✕ Cons
- Base earn is a modest 1 MR per ₹50 — value is concentrated in the milestone thresholds, not everyday spend
- Amex acceptance gap at small merchants remains a pain point
- ₹5,000 annual fee with no waiver option
- Fuel earns no MR points and attracts a convenience fee — 0% at HPCL under ₹5,000, 1% at HPCL ₹5,000+ and at BPCL/IOCL, 2.5% at other fuel stations

How to redeem rewards
Ways to convert what you earn into real value.
- 🎁Platinum Travel Collection: the card's flagship route — milestone and base MR points redeem on curated travel options (Taj ~₹0.40/point since the April 2025 revision; Postcard Hotels ~₹0.50; Air India ~₹0.30)
- 🎁Partner transfers: Marriott Bonvoy 1:1; airlines (KrisFlyer, British Airways, Qatar, Asia Miles) at 2:1, with Virgin Atlantic better at 5:4 since 18 August 2026 (Amex published no end date, so treat it as the current rate, not a permanent one) — worthwhile only against a genuinely good award
- 🎁Amex Travel Online (the "Travel With Points" option): PAUSED — Amex's own Membership Rewards programme T&C records it as "temporarily paused effective 27 January 2026" and publishes no resumption date, so points cannot be spent on flights and hotels this way today
- 🎁Statement credit: ~₹0.25/MR — lower value, avoid if possible
What your Amex Membership Rewards are worth
Realistic value per point by redemption route — the difference is what most people leave on the table.

Brand & e-gift vouchers
Virgin Atlantic 5:4 now leads at ₹0.80/pt, ahead of Marriott 1:1 (₹0.60); the other airlines transfer 2:1 (₹0.50) and Hilton is 2:3. Ratios re-read 2026-08-18

The ladder was cut twice in one year. After the March 2026 devaluation pushed the richest reward to ₹7 lakh, a second cut on 10 September 2026 deleted the ₹1.9 lakh tier outright and stripped the 22,500 points off ₹7 lakh, leaving a card whose only milestone points come from a single ₹4 lakh tier. Since 1 October 2026 even the lounge visits need ₹1 lakh of spend in the previous quarter. Below ₹4 lakh of annual spend you hold a ₹5,000 fee card with a modest base earn.

The bottom line
After the March 2026 restructure the Platinum Travel is still one of India's more predictable milestone cards, but the value now sits at higher spend tiers and arrives as MR points rather than the old guaranteed vouchers. Clear ₹4 lakh-plus a year and it earns its ₹5,000 fee; spend less and the math collapses.

Premium in Reality, ₹1,237 in the Pocket: How an Expiring Taj Voucher Got Us Two Taj-View Suites
My last piece was the anti-flex — the cheapest stay I could engineer. This is the mirror image: genuinely premium in reality, almost nothing out of pocket. How an Amex Taj voucher that was days from expiry put my family in two Taj-Mahal-view suites at Tajview Agra — and the unglamorous booking moves (book the base room, call the travel desk, never the app) that quietly multiplied a ₹10,000 voucher into ₹34,000 of suite.
American Express Platinum Card (Charge)
Forget the reward rate — the Amex Platinum is sold on access, not points. Centurion lounges (the only India card that gets them), Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits worth ~₹44,300 a booking, hotel elite status and a concierge that works justify the ~₹78,000 fee for one specific person: the near-monthly international traveller. Fly twice a year and it's an expensive ornament.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club for Indian Cardholders 2026: Tiers, Partners and What Virgin Points Buy
Virgin Atlantic flies double-daily to Delhi and Mumbai and 13 times a week to Bengaluru, and since 18 August 2026 American Express India moves Membership Rewards into Flying Club at 5:4, the best airline ratio on the Amex India menu. This guide covers the programme itself: Virgin Points (which never expire), the Red/Silver/Gold ladder at 400 and 1,000 Tier Points, all 25 airline partners including IndiGo, Household pooling across 10 people, and the hotel back doors that open the programme to Axis, HDFC, HSBC, SBI and Kotak holders. It also covers what most programme guides get wrong: Virgin prices its own seats dynamically, so a Delhi–London award ranges from 6,000 points to 76,000 depending on the date.
Amex to Virgin Atlantic at 5:4: The Best Exit Membership Rewards Has in India
On 18 August 2026 American Express India moved Membership Rewards to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club from 2:1 to 5:4, so 800 MR now becomes 640 Virgin Points instead of 400. At our baseline valuations that puts Virgin at about ₹0.80 per MR against ₹0.60 for Marriott Bonvoy and ₹0.50 for every other airline on the Amex menu, making it the best exit Membership Rewards currently has. This guide works through the arithmetic route by route, shows why Virgin's own seats cannot be planned against at all (a live Delhi–London search ran from 6,000 points to 76,000 depending only on the date), and is straight about the one thing Amex has not put in writing: the change carries no end date and no promotional labelling, which points to a permanent repricing, but Amex has not said so outright.
American Express Gold Card
A perfectly competent Membership Rewards card that's rarely the right one. At ₹4,500 with no waiver, leaning on a monthly six-transaction bonus and lightened by the 2025 removal of fuel earning, the Gold is squeezed from both sides — the cheaper MRCC does much of the same for less, and the Platinum Charge does travel benefits properly. It fits only the heavy, deliberate MR user.

- ▼ FeeEffective 15 Nov 2026
Late payment fee set on the total amount due
30% of the minimum amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,000→Slabs on the total amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,250
On statements generated after 15 November 2026, the late payment fee on American Express's credit cards is set by slabs of the total amount due, from ₹500 to ₹1,250, instead of 30% of the minimum amount due within ₹500 to ₹1,000. It is charged when nothing, or less than the minimum amount due, is paid by the due date. Amex says the change brings the fee in line with RBI requirements and refers members to its updated MITC, effective 15 November, for the slabs. Amex's charge cards are not affected.

- ▼ RedemptionEffective 15 Nov 2026
Membership Rewards points kept separately for each card
One points balance across all your basic cards→A separate balance for each card; points cannot be moved between cards
From 15 November 2026, a member who holds two or more basic American Express cards has a separate Membership Rewards balance on each card, where today the points of all of them sit in one account. Existing points are split by the card that earned them, each card redeems from its own balance, and moving points from one card to another ends for good. Earn rates, redemption options and the value of a point do not change. A member who combined several cards' points to reach a bigger redemption now has to reach it on one card's balance.

- ◆ MilestoneEffective 15 Nov 2026
Milestone spend counted by posting date
Spend counted by purchase date→Spend counted by posting date; bonus by the end of that month
From 15 November 2026, spend towards a milestone counts on the date a transaction posts to the card rather than the date of the purchase, and the bonus points or voucher are credited by the end of the calendar month in which the milestone is reached. A purchase made on 30 November that posts in December counts towards December. Regular earning does not change, and bonuses already earned stay. A member aiming for a monthly milestone near the end of a month should allow a few days for purchases to post.

- ◆ RewardEffective 15 Nov 2026
Points paused on a card still overdue at its next statement
No redemptions on any card while one is overdue→No earning or redemption on that card from its next statement until paid
From 15 November 2026, if a payment is still due when a card's next statement is generated, that card stops earning and redeeming Membership Rewards points from that statement date until the overdue balance is paid. Points already earned stay, and the member's other cards carry on, since each keeps its own balance. Amex's current Membership Rewards terms already forfeit the points of a statement left unpaid by the due date (reinstatable for a fee) and block redemptions on every card while any one is overdue; the new page does not say whether the forfeiture clause stays. Paying the overdue amount before the next statement date avoids the pause.

American Express pauses new Supplementary Card applications from 27 October 2026 while it moves its Indian cards to a new technology platform. An application filled in by 11:59 PM on 26 October is processed until 3 November. Amex calls the pause temporary and has not said when applications reopen. The pause covers new applications only.
