Kotak UPI RuPay Credit Card

A lifetime-free, virtual-only RuPay card built for one job: putting a credit line behind your UPI QR payments. Link it to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm and scan-and-pay from a credit line, earning 3 reward points per ₹100. Be clear-eyed on value, though — Kotak points are worth about ₹0.10 (₹0.07 as cash since June 2025), so the effective return is a thin ~0.3%, and a long exclusion list earns nothing. A convenience card, not a rewards engine.

As a lifetime-free way to put a credit line behind your UPI QR payments, the Kotak UPI RuPay does its one job well — no fee, works everywhere UPI does. Just be clear-eyed about the rewards — at ~₹0.10 a point (₹0.07 as cash) the 3 points per ₹100 is a thin ~0.3%, and a long list of everyday categories earns nothing. Hold it for UPI convenience, not returns; a flat-cashback card should carry your larger spends.

Best forFor an existing Kotak credit-card holder who wants a free credit line on UPI for everyday scan-and-pay and does not care much about reward value. You cannot take it as a standalone first card. A sensible free addition to a wallet for UPI convenience — not a card to route big spends through, given the weak points and long exclusion list.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lifetime free — no joining or annual fee
  • Works at any UPI QR code via Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm
  • 3 reward points per ₹100 on eligible spends
  • Fully digital — virtual card registers in the Kotak app

Cons

  • Weak Kotak point value — ~₹0.10 on the catalogue, ₹0.07 as cash since June 2025
  • Long exclusion list (rent, fuel, railway, wallet, EMI, education, insurance, government, utilities over ₹35k) earns nothing
  • Virtual-only — no physical card is issued
  • No add-on card and no cash advance facility at all
  • Kotak says customers with multiple CRNs cannot link a Kotak RuPay credit card on any UPI app for now, so the card's one job may not work for you
  • Standard ~3.5% forex markup on international use

Quick verdict: The Kotak UPI RuPay is a lifetime-free, virtual-only RuPay card built for one job: putting a credit line behind your UPI QR payments. Hold it for UPI convenience, not returns.

UPI-linked credit cards solved a real friction: paying by QR from a credit line instead of a bank balance. The Kotak UPI RuPay is Kotak's entry in that category — free, virtual-only, and RuPay-rail, so it works wherever UPI does. As a no-cost addition to a wallet it is easy to justify. As a rewards card, it is honest to set expectations low.

What it is

  • Lifetime free — zero joining and annual fees. Not charge-free, though: rent carries a 1% fee from

the first rupee, and 1% applies to wallet loads and gaming above ₹10,000 a cycle, fuel above ₹25,000 and utilities above ₹35,000, plus ₹500 over-limit and 3.5% forex.

  • Existing Kotak credit-card holders only — Kotak states this outright in its eligibility criteria

("Customer should be an existing Kotak Credit Card holder"), so it cannot be your first card.

  • 3 reward points per ₹100 on eligible spends.
  • RuPay on UPI — links to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm and pays at any UPI QR code.
  • Virtual only — no physical card is couriered; the details auto-register in the Kotak mobile banking app.
  • No add-on card and no cash advance — Kotak states both facilities are unavailable on this card.
  • A linking caveat worth checking first — Kotak says customers holding multiple CRNs cannot link

their Kotak RuPay credit card on any UPI app for now, and for the first 24 hours after linking, spending is capped at ₹5,000 a day.

Because it is free, there is no fee waiver to chase and no annual cost to weigh. The only real question is what the rewards are worth.

The honest bit: weak points and a long exclusion list

Here is where clear eyes matter. Kotak's reward point is worth about ₹0.10 on the catalogue, and only ₹0.07 as cash since the June 2025 revision, with a minimum of 1,000 points to redeem (2,000 for cash value). So 3 points per ₹100 is an effective ~0.3% at best, closer to ~0.21% if you take cash. That is well below a decent flat-cashback card.

The exclusion list is long, too. Rent, fuel, railway, wallet loads, EMI, education, balance transfer, insurance, government, online skill-based gaming, and utility spends above ₹35,000 a statement cycle earn no points. Much of a typical monthly outflow — rent, fuel, utilities — simply does not count here. So even the ~0.3% applies to a narrower slice of spend than it first appears.

This is a convenience card, not a rewards card. The value is the free UPI credit line, not the points.

How it fits a wallet

Think of the UPI RuPay as a free utility, not a primary card. It is the card you keep for small, everyday scan-and-pay — a chai stall, an auto, a kirana QR — where the convenience of paying on credit matters more than the reward. Its natural partner is a card that carries the larger spends: within Kotak, the Kotak Cashback+ Prime is built for online groceries and food, which is where you would route your meaningful spending — check that card's own page for its current terms.

It sits alongside Kotak's other UPI-capable card, the Kotak League RuPay, which adds a milestone movie benefit for a ₹499 fee. If you want a genuinely free UPI card and do not need that milestone, the UPI RuPay is the simpler pick; if you will clear the League's spend milestone, that card earns more. For a first-timer building credit, the FD-secured Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent is the better starting point.

Who should hold it

The UPI RuPay suits a UPI-first spender who wants a free credit line behind their QR payments and is not counting on reward value. As a second or third card it costs nothing to keep and adds genuine convenience — and second or third is the only thing it can be, because Kotak issues it exclusively to customers who already hold a Kotak credit card.

That eligibility rule is the first thing to check, and it rules out the group who would otherwise find a free UPI credit line most useful: anyone without a Kotak card yet. It is also the wrong card for anyone hoping to earn meaningful rewards — the ~0.3% return and long exclusion list make that a non-starter — and for someone who wants a physical card, since none is issued. And if you hold more than one Kotak CRN, check whether the card can be linked on your UPI app at all — Kotak says that combination does not work for now, which would leave the card unable to do the one thing you took it for.

The bottom line

The Kotak UPI RuPay does its one job well: a lifetime-free, virtual RuPay card that puts a credit line behind your UPI payments, working everywhere UPI does. Just hold it for that convenience, not for returns — Kotak's points are weak (~₹0.10, ₹0.07 as cash) and a long exclusion list narrows what even earns. Keep it as a free utility card for scan-and-pay, and let a proper cashback card carry the spending that actually matters.

I have spent over a decade on Indian credit cards, mostly for the points and miles. What I write about is what a card is actually worth after the fine print, the caps and exclusions that decide the real return, and the changes issuers make quietly. No paid placements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kotak UPI RuPay Credit Card worth getting in 2026?
As a lifetime-free way to put a credit line behind your UPI QR payments, yes — it does that one job well at no cost. But treat it as a convenience card, not a rewards engine: at about ₹0.10 a point (₹0.07 as cash), the 3 points per ₹100 is a thin ~0.3%, and a long list of everyday categories earns nothing. Route larger spends through a flat-cashback card instead.
What does the card cost?
No joining fee and no annual fee — but not zero charges. Kotak levies 1% on rent from the first rupee, and 1% on wallet loads and online gaming above ₹10,000 a statement cycle, fuel above ₹25,000 and utilities above ₹35,000, plus 1% on education paid through third-party apps. Add a ₹500 over-limit charge and a 3.5% foreign-currency markup. There is also no add-on card and no cash withdrawal facility on this card at all.
How many rewards does it earn?
3 reward points per ₹100 on eligible spends. 1,000 points redeem for ₹100 — about ₹0.10 a point on the catalogue, and ₹0.07 as cash since the June 2025 revision — so the effective rate is roughly 0.3% at best, ~0.21% taken as cash.
Which spends earn no rewards?
Rent, fuel, railway, wallet loads, EMI, education, balance transfer, insurance, government, online skill-based gaming, and utility spends above ₹35,000 per statement cycle all earn no points.
Is a physical card issued?
No — it is a virtual-only card. The details auto-register in the Kotak mobile banking app and link to UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm for scan-and-pay.
