HOTEL CARDS
Best Hotel Credit Cards in India 2026
Top hotel credit cards in India — earn Marriott Bonvoy, Taj and Club Marriott benefits, or transfer to Accor ALL 1:1 with the HSBC TravelOne for free nights. Ordered by our own shortlist, chosen and ranked by hand — weighing real-world return against whether you can actually get the card. For the order at your own spend, use the recommender.
Hotel credit cards reward you with hotel loyalty points and complimentary elite status — so paid stays earn free nights, and you get room upgrades, late checkout, and bonus points without completing the usual qualifying nights. For anyone who stays in branded hotels even a few times a year, mid-tier elite status alone can outweigh the annual fee.
There are three routes to hotel value. A co-branded hotel card (like the Marriott Bonvoy HDFC) earns one chain’s points directly and adds base elite status plus an annual free-night award — best if you’re loyal to a single group. Premium and super-premium cards instead bundle hotel memberships (Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Taj/IHCL Epicure, Club Marriott) as a perk alongside broader travel rewards — best if you spread stays across brands. And flexible transfer cards convert their points into hotel loyalty currency: the HSBC TravelOne and HSBC Premier both transfer to Accor ALL at 1:1 — the best Accor rate among cards open to application, where HDFC, SBI Card MILES and most Axis cards move points at 2:1 or worse — alongside roughly 20 airline and hotel partners. It is the route to take if you collect Accor, Marriott or Hilton points rather than chase status. (Each card appears on one of our lists only; these two sit on our travel and reward-points lists.)
Even a card with no hotel tie-up can buy hotel value on redemption. American Express Membership Rewards, for example, convert to Taj vouchers at roughly ₹0.58 a point through the 24K Gold Collection — about a ₹14,000 Taj voucher for 24,000 points — which makes an Amex card like the Platinum Reserve a quiet route to Taj stays if you already hold one; American Express has paused new applications in India since August 2026.
Before choosing, weigh how often you actually stay in branded hotels against the fee, and check whether the membership grants true elite status — free nights and upgrades — or only a dining-and-stay discount programme. The two differ sharply in value.

Fuel fair-usage terms tightened — trigger halved, levy on the whole aggregate
1% fair-usage charge once monthly fuel spends exceeded 50% of the credit limit or ₹50,000→1% on the entire aggregate once a single fuel transaction exceeds ₹10,000 or monthly fuel spends exceed ₹25,000
From 1 July 2026 AU tightened its fuel fair-usage charge: the trigger dropped from ₹50,000 of aggregate fuel spend in a calendar month to ₹25,000 (or a single fuel transaction above ₹10,000), and the 1% charge is now levied on the entire aggregate fuel spend for the month rather than the portion above the threshold. Fair-usage charges do not apply to international transactions. The complimentary fuel-surcharge waiver bands are unchanged.

Dynamic currency conversion markup raised to 1.75%
1% markup→1.75% markup
HDFC's MITC: "Dynamic currency conversion Markup Fee: With effect from 15th May 2026, a Markup fee of 1.75% will be levied on all transactions carried out in Indian Currency at an international location or at merchants which are located in India but registered overseas." This is separate from, and stacks on top of, the card's ordinary foreign-currency markup. It is the charge you pay for accepting a terminal's offer to bill you in rupees while abroad - always decline that offer and pay in the local currency. It also catches India-based purchases from merchants registered overseas, which is easy to trigger without leaving the country. The PIXEL MITC dates the same change 17 May 2026.

Transportation spends stop earning rewards
Transportation-category spends earned reward points→No reward points on transportation MCCs
From 10 April 2026 AU stopped awarding reward points on transportation merchant categories (rail, transit, tolls, parking and similar MCCs) across its credit-card portfolio, so Zenith Plus no longer earns points on those specific spends. The same bank-wide notice raised the airport-lounge spend threshold from ₹20,000 to ₹50,000/quarter for AU's spend-gated cards, but Zenith Plus's lounge access is unconditional (no spend gate), so that half of the notice does not affect this card. (Dating note, 2026-08-06: AU's own surfaces carry both 1 April and 10 April 2026 as the effective date of the transportation change, and the bank-wide revision PDF originally cited for it now serves a lounge-only notice at the same URL; both dates are disclosed rather than silently picking one.)

Free Night Award top-up limit raised to 25,000 points
Top up a Free Night certificate with up to 15,000 points→Top up a Free Night certificate with up to 25,000 points
Marriott Bonvoy raised the number of points members can add to a Free Night Award certificate from 15,000 to 25,000, a program-wide change that applies to the card's welcome and renewal Free Night Awards. In practice the card's up-to-15,000-point certificate now stretches to hotels priced around 40,000 points a night, meaningfully widening where a single Free Night can be used.

AURUM launched as SBI's super-premium metal card
SBI Card entered the super-premium segment with the tungsten-metal AURUM, replacing ELITE at the top of its range — ₹9,999 + GST fee, a 40,000 reward-point (~₹10,000) welcome benefit, unlimited international lounges and monthly BookMyShow movie tickets. Note: several 2021 write-ups also credited the launch card with a Taj Epicure membership. SBI has never published one on any AURUM page, and our own 2023 event shows the membership slot held Amazon Prime and Discovery+ until mid-2023, so we do not carry that claim.

- 29 Aug 2026 · Removed Amex Platinum Reserve — American Express paused new applications across its entire India line-up in August 2026, so this card can no longer be applied for; a paused pick is silently dropped from the rendered list, which would publish a rank with a hole in it.
