Avios is the quiet workhorse of the points world — and the thing most Indian flyers miss is that it isn't a British Airways currency. Avios is one shared balance across British Airways Executive Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Iberia Plus, Finnair Plus and Aer Lingus. Collect it once from an Indian card and you can point it at whichever of those airlines has the seat — Qatar for a Qsuites business cabin, British Airways for a short-haul distance-band hop, Finnair for the cheapest first move. Because the balance pools, "which airline do I earn with" stops mattering; only "which airline has the award seat" does.
How to earn Avios in India
There are two ways in: transfer bank reward points, or earn Avios directly on spend. The direct route is the rare one — the IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite is the only Indian credit card that mints Avios straight from rupee spend, with no transfer step and no conversion loss. Everything else is a feeder that converts bank points into Avios. Ratios move without notice, so confirm the live rate on the issuer's portal before shifting a large balance.
| Card / route | Ratio | Note |
|---|---|---|
| IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite (co-brand) | Direct earn | Earns Avios on spend — no transfer step; India's rare direct-earn Avios card |
| HSBC TravelOne | 1:1 | Both British Airways and Qatar Privilege Club; no cap |
| SBI Card MILES | 1:1 | The 2024 MILES sub-brand only (not general SBI cards), to British Airways |
| HDFC Infinia, Diners Club Black | 2:1 | To Qatar / BA — it is 2:1, not the widely repeated 1:1 |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | ~3:1 | ~3:1 to Qatar / BA, but 2:1 to Finnair — the smarter first hop |
| American Express Membership Rewards | 2:1 | To BA / Qatar; confirm the live ratio first |
The IndusInd co-brand sits on a premium Visa Infinite chassis — see the full fee and eligibility detail on our IndusInd page before you apply.
What an Avios is worth
We work an Avios at about ₹1 as a planning figure. That makes a 1:1 transfer worth ~₹1 per source point, a 2:1 route ~₹0.50, and a ~3:1 route ~₹0.33 — which is why the HDFC ratios matter so much. Avios prices awards by distance flown, not a flat chart, so whether you beat ₹1 is decided entirely by the redemption. Short hops on a partner with low taxes clear well above ₹1; a high-surcharge ex-London British Airways longhaul can drag below it. Distance-banding rewards the disciplined flyer and punishes the lazy one.
Sweet spots
Two patterns consistently beat the ₹1 baseline. First, short-haul redemptions: the lowest distance bands make a one- or two-hour flight astonishingly cheap in Avios, so regional hops are where Avios earns its keep. Second, Qatar Airways partner award space — Qsuites business class booked with Avios routinely returns two to three times our ₹1 figure, and Qatar releases meaningful award inventory to Privilege Club. Feed the balance through Finnair Plus when your card offers a better ratio there; the Avios land identical.
Who should chase Avios
Avios rewards the flexible flyer who books early and flies distance-smart, not the person hunting one flat redemption. If you already earn HSBC TravelOne points, want a direct-earn card, or fly Qatar out of India, it belongs in your plan. If you value a fixed, predictable chart, a fixed-value programme like KrisFlyer may suit you better.
Below are the cards that earn or feed Avios — the IndusInd direct earner plus every transfer route above.
How to transfer credit-card points to British Airways & Qatar Avios
Every standing route from an Indian reward currency, read from our transfer graph rather than typed alongside it. A ratio given as a range differs by card — the graph knows which cards sit at each end, and you should still confirm the live rate in your bank’s rewards portal before transferring. Never assume a promotional rate is the standing one.

The IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite is one of India's most unusual cards — it earns British Airways/Qatar Avios directly from rupee spend, one of the world's most valuable airline currencies. It pays 3 Avios per ₹200 on base spend (domestic and international alike), 6 per ₹200 on point-of-sale spend inside the one international region you nominate as your "preferred destination", 5 per ₹200 at British Airways' and Qatar Airways' own sites and apps, and 1 per ₹200 on government, utility, education and insurance. Online spend even at the nominated destination earns the base 3, and fuel earns nothing at all. A two-rung milestone ladder adds 18,000 bonus Avios at ₹8 lakh of annual spend and another 18,000 at ₹16 lakh cumulative (36,000 a year maximum), on top of a 20,000-Avios welcome bonus and a 5,000-Avios bonus on each annual renewal. Read the forex line carefully — the headline mark-up is 3.5%, and the discounted 1.5% rate applies only to card-present spend at that one nominated destination. Priority Pass lounge access runs to 2 domestic + 2 international visits a quarter. The fee is ₹10,000 joining and ₹5,000 a year thereafter, with no waiver. For a BA/Qatar flyer who will actively hunt award seats it is uniquely useful; for everyone else it is the wrong tool, and scarce ex-India award availability is the perennial risk.
Why it stands out Earns BA/Qatar Avios directly on Indian rupee spend — one of the world's most valuable currencies — with a 20,000-Avios welcome, up to 36,000 milestone Avios a year and a 5,000-Avios renewal bonus
Best suited for For frequent British Airways/Qatar flyers who will actively chase premium-cabin award seats. Not for casual collectors — Avios are only as good as the ex-India award space you can find.

HDFC Infinia is invitation-only for HDFC's top relationship customers. Sanjay, a senior executive with an HDFC salary account, uses SmartBuy to book business flights: 5X points = ₹1 per ₹6 spent. His ₹5L/month spend earns about ₹2 lakh in points a year at the 3.3% base — on ELIGIBLE spend only: fuel, rent, government, wallet loads, EMI, third-party-app education and property management earn nothing here, and grocery and utility each stop at 2,000 points a month, so a real ₹5L/month wallet lands below that figure. Unlimited Priority Pass covers his weekly lounge visits globally. The 2% forex markup on ₹20L/year international spend saves ₹30,000 before GST against the 3.5% standard markup on most HDFC cards.
Why it stands out 10X SmartBuy points — the highest points density in Indian credit cards
Best suited for Infinia is for HDFC's top-tier relationship customers — typically those with ₹30L+ invested in HDFC products or a salary account with significant AUM. If you can get invited, the SmartBuy accelerator (10X on hotels, 5X on flights) is the highest points density on any Indian card.

The HDFC Diners Club Black Metal earns ~3.3% on all spend, up to 10X on SmartBuy hotels and unlimited lounge access, with its ₹10,000 fee waived at ₹8 lakh. HDFC's premium all-rounder earns 5 reward points per ₹150 (~3.3% at ₹1/point) across spends, with SmartBuy turning travel into double-digit returns (10X on hotels and partner brands like IGP, Jockey and PharmEasy, ~33%; 5X on flights, buses and Myntra, ~16.5%; 3X on trains and brand vouchers). It adds 2X on weekend dining at standalone restaurants, Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One one-year memberships once you spend ₹1.5 lakh in the first 90 days, a 10,000-point milestone on ₹4 lakh quarterly spend, and unlimited access to 1,300+ lounges worldwide on the Diners Club network itself. Largely spared the May 2026 HDFC devaluation, it remains one of the strongest premium cards for high spenders.
Why it stands out ~3.3% base with rich SmartBuy accelerators, three bundled memberships and unlimited 1,300+ lounges; ₹10,000 fee waives at ₹8 lakh
Best suited for For HDFC customers who book travel via HDFC SmartBuy and spend ₹50,000+ per month total. The SmartBuy 10X multiplier is what makes this card exceptional — if you do not use SmartBuy, the Infinia or Regalia Gold offers better everyday value.

The American Express Platinum Charge Card is Amex India's flagship — a charge card (no pre-set spending limit) built around travel and lifestyle rather than reward rate. The ₹66,000 + GST annual fee buys the Global Lounge Collection (1,550+ lounges, more than any rival), a welcome gift worth up to ₹60,000 (Taj, Luxe or Postcard, on ₹50,000 spend in the first two months), a renewal voucher up to ₹35,000 at ₹20 lakh annual spend, and a stack of elite hotel memberships — Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Hilton Honors Gold, Taj Epicure and Accor Plus among them. For the high-spending international traveller who uses the benefits, the value dwarfs the fee; for everyone else it is an expensive way to hold a metal card.
Why it stands out Amex's flagship charge card — 1,550+ lounge Global Lounge Collection, up to ₹60,000 welcome gift, ₹35,000 renewal voucher and a stack of hotel elite memberships
Best suited for For high-spending international travellers (typically ₹20 lakh+ a year) who will use the lounge access, hotel elite status and Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits. Wasted on anyone who won't extract the travel value.

The Amex Platinum Travel is a milestone-driven Membership Rewards card whose ladder was cut twice in 2026. Since 10 September 2026 one points tier remains: 10,000 bonus MR points at ₹4 lakh of annual spend, redeemable on the Platinum Travel Collection. The ₹1.9 lakh tier no longer pays its 7,500 points, and ₹7 lakh no longer pays 22,500 — that tier now delivers a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-Gift Card instead, doubled from ₹10,000. The value is back-loaded into those thresholds and is now paid more in Taj vouchers than in transferable points, so it suits deliberate spenders who clear ₹4 lakh-plus a year and are content to redeem at Taj.
Why it stands out Milestone rewards on the Platinum Travel Collection — 10,000 Membership Rewards points at ₹4L, plus a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-Gift Card at ₹7L spend
Best suited for For deliberate spenders who clear ₹4 lakh-plus a year and will redeem Membership Rewards on the Platinum Travel Collection. Less suited to lighter spenders now that the richest milestone sits at ₹7 lakh.

HDFC Regalia Gold after the May 2026 revision: 5 reward points per ₹200 (~1.25%), 10X on SmartBuy hotels, spend-gated lounges, ₹2,500 fee waived at ₹4 lakh. A premium all-rounder until the 15 May 2026 revision trimmed it, its base earn dropped to 5 reward points per ₹200 (~1.25% at ₹0.50/point, down from 4 RP/₹150), and from July 2026 domestic lounge access is gated behind ₹60,000 of quarterly spend. It still earns an accelerated 25 RP per ₹200 (~6.25%) at partner brands (Myntra, Marks & Spencer, Nykaa, Reliance Digital), and SmartBuy turns flights into 5X (~6.25%) and hotels into 10X (~12.5%), capped 4,000 RP/month. The ₹2,500 fee waives at ₹4 lakh of annual spend, with quarterly ₹1,500 vouchers (₹1.5L) and ₹5,000 flight vouchers (₹5L and ₹7.5L). The ₹2,500 welcome benefit is not automatic — HDFC's terms gate it on ₹1 lakh of net retail spend in the first 90 days, though its own FAQ still advertises it unconditionally. Redemption is capped at 70% of a booking's value and at 50,000 reward points a calendar month. Still capable, just no longer the effortless pick it was.
Why it stands out Accelerated ~6.25% at partner brands and via SmartBuy, but a thinner ~1.25% base and spend-gated lounges after the May 2026 devaluation; ₹4 lakh fee waiver
Best suited for For premium spenders who will use SmartBuy and the partner-brand accelerators and can clear ₹60,000/quarter to keep lounge access — less compelling for low-effort everyday use now.

The HSBC TravelOne is India's most flexible transferable-miles card — and the unlikely winner of 2026's premium-card upheaval. While Axis halved the Magnus's transfer ratio and stripped Accor, Marriott and Qatar out of the Atlas, the TravelOne held its ground and improved: its direct, instant, no-cap 1:1 transfer into Accor ALL is the best Accor rate on any card you can simply apply for (HSBC Premier shares the same partner table but needs a banking relationship; Axis dropped Accor on 2 April 2026 and had it back by 25 September, but at 2:1 or worse outside its invite-only cards). It keeps uncapped access to 20 airline and hotel partners (15 airlines + 5 hotels, mostly 1:1). It earns 4 reward points per ₹100 on flights, travel aggregators and forex spends (accelerated rate capped monthly; direct hotel bookings earn the base rate) and 2 per ₹100 on most other spends — though utilities, fuel, insurance, education, government, rent and wallet loads earn nothing — and booking through HSBC's own Rewards Marketplace ("Travel with Points") portal lifts hotels to 6X (24 points/₹100) and flights to 4X (16 points/₹100), capped at 18,000 points/month — with 6 domestic and 4 international lounge visits a year and a 10,000-point milestone bonus on ₹12 lakh of annual spend. The one catch to be clear about: the forex markup is a standard 3.5% — this is a transfer-partner card, not a low-forex one, so for heavy overseas swiping pair it with a sub-1% forex card like the HSBC Premier. The ₹4,999 fee is reversed in full — GST included — once primary and add-on card spends together cross ₹8 lakh in a card anniversary year.
Why it stands out The 1:1 Accor transfer you can actually apply for; 20 partners, no transfer cap; 4 RP/₹100 on flights, travel aggregators & forex, up to 24 RP/₹100 on hotels via the Rewards Marketplace portal
Best suited for For the engaged international traveller who will transfer miles to partners and redeem well — especially Accor loyalists, for whom nothing else you can apply for in India matches its direct 1:1 route. Not for non-travellers or heavy overseas spenders (3.5% forex).

The American Express Platinum Reserve is Amex India's mid-premium card and a quiet hotel-value play. For ₹10,000 + GST (waived on ₹10 lakh of annual spend) it bundles three memberships that usually cost real money on their own — ALL Accor Plus Explorer (the card grants 20 Accor status nights, which sits at ALL Silver on Accor's nights/points ladder, plus 15% off stays, 30% off dining and Red Hot Deals; buying Accor Plus directly instead grants 30 status nights — Gold — and Buy-One-Get-One free nights, which the card version omits), Taj Epicure Plus (20% off stays, 25% off dining, 20% off spa across IHCL) and EazyDiner Prime. You earn 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹50 on retail spends (fuel, utilities, insurance and EMI excluded), and MR redeem strongly via the 24K Gold Collection — about ₹0.58 a point into Taj vouchers. Add 12 domestic lounge visits a year, a Priority Pass, golf and monthly ₹1,000 spend-milestone vouchers. The catch is a 3.5% forex markup, so it is not a card to swipe abroad — it is a membership and redemption instrument, and an ideal status partner to a high-earning transfer card.
Why it stands out Amex's accessible membership powerhouse — Accor Plus Explorer, Taj Epicure and EazyDiner Prime bundled for a ₹10,000 fee that waives at ₹10L spend
Best suited for For Accor and Taj guests who want hotel memberships and strong MR redemptions at an accessible fee — and as the "status" half of a card pairing alongside a high-value transfer card. Not for overseas swiping (3.5% forex).

The American Express Gold Card is a Membership Rewards earner built around disciplined point collection rather than flashy category multipliers. In India it earns 1 MR point per ₹50 on everyday spends, jumps to 5X on e-vouchers bought through Amex's ShopWise platform (the separate Reward Multiplier brand links close on 30 September 2026) and layers on a monthly milestone of 1,000 bonus points when you put through six transactions of ₹1,000 or more. The real value unlocks at redemption — points are worth up to ₹0.50 each via the Gold Collection once you cross 18,000–24,000 points — so it rewards members who actually use the MR catalogue, transfer to airline/hotel partners, and lean on the 20% dining discounts.
Why it stands out Membership Rewards earning with a 1,000-point monthly milestone and up to ₹0.50/point Gold Collection redemption
Best suited for For Amex members who spend steadily across everyday categories and will actually redeem Membership Rewards well — via the Gold Collection, airline/hotel transfers and dining discounts. Less suited to anyone wanting simple, automatic cashback.

Amex MRCC (Membership Rewards Credit Card) is American Express's entry card in India — 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹50 on most spends, though fuel, insurance and utilities no longer earn. Its real strength is redemption: points transfer to airline and hotel partners (Marriott 1:1, most airlines 2:1, and Virgin Atlantic at a better 5:4 since 18 August 2026) and punch well above their weight when used through the rewards catalogue. Two monthly milestones reward regular use — 1,000 bonus points for four transactions of ₹1,500+, and another 1,000 for ₹20,000 of spend in the same month. The welcome benefit is 4,000 bonus points on ₹15,000 spend within 90 days, and a one-time 5,000-point bonus lands on first-year renewal, on payment of the renewal fee (credited within 90 days of renewal).
Why it stands out Membership Rewards points that transfer to airline and hotel partners at outsized value
Best suited for For Amex aspirants who want to collect Membership Rewards points for future hotel or airline redemptions without paying a premium card fee. Best if you spend steadily each month — the value is in the two monthly milestone bonuses and transferring points to partners, not in category multipliers.

SBI Card MILES is SBI's flexible-miles entry — generic Travel Credits that transfer to 26 airline and hotel partners at up to ₹1 each, with no single-airline lock-in. The base MILES earns 2 Travel Credits per ₹200 on travel and 1 per ₹200 on other spend (about 0.5% and 0.25% at our 50-paisa value, up to 1% and 0.5% on good 1:1 transfers), with a 1,500-credit welcome, a 5,000-credit milestone at ₹5 lakh, and the ₹1,499 fee waived at ₹6 lakh. For the occasional flyer who wants travel rewards without the alliance homework, it is a sensible low-commitment start. The value hinges entirely on your willingness to transfer — catalogue redemptions crater to ₹0.25 and the travel portal pays ₹0.50, which is the value we model by default — and fuel, rent, utilities, wallet loads and insurance are excluded from earning. Frequent travellers will outgrow it for a deeper-partnered card.
Why it stands out Flexible Travel Credits transferable to 24 airline & hotel partners at up to ₹1 each — no airline lock-in
Best suited for For occasional flyers who want flexible, transferable travel rewards without committing to one airline. Transfer to partners for full value; frequent travellers will outgrow it for a deeper-partnered card.
