The first of the month is when banks like to change things, and 1 October was busy. If you hold an AU card, an Amex, or an Axis Select, something on your card works differently now.
The short version
- AU Small Finance Bank raised the forex markup on the Zenith and Vetta to 3.49% and cut the fuel-surcharge waiver on several cards to ₹100 a month.
- American Express closed Reward Multiplier on 30 September; ShopWise e-vouchers still earn their bonus.
- Amex Platinum Travel lounge visits now depend on last quarter's spend, and so do lounge visits on AU's cards for Chartered Accountants and Company Secretaries.
- The Axis Select's ₹3 lakh milestone stopped counting rent, fuel, utilities and six other categories.
- Apple Pay arrived in India on 30 September, with Axis Bank credit cards the only ones you can add at launch.
What changed on your cards
AU Small Finance Bank: dearer abroad, smaller fuel waivers. From 1 October the Zenith and Vetta charge a 3.49% markup on international spends, up from 1.99% and 2.99%. With GST that's about 4.1%, so if you used either card abroad it's worth looking at a low-markup card for travel. The same day AU capped the 1% fuel-surcharge waiver at ₹100 a statement month on the Zenith (down from ₹1,000), the Vetta (from ₹250), the Xcite, Xcite Ace and Xcite Ultra (from ₹200) and the Altura Plus (from ₹150). The Zenith+ keeps its ₹1,000 cap. The RuPay versions of the Zenith and Vetta change in the same way.
AU CA and AU CS: lounge visits need last quarter's spend. The two complimentary domestic lounge visits a quarter on AU's cards for Chartered Accountants and Company Secretaries now need ₹50,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter, the same gate AU's other cards have had since April. So your October to December visits depend on what you spent between July and September.
American Express: Reward Multiplier has closed. From 30 September there are no bonus points on purchases made through Amex's links to individual brands such as Apple, Myntra, Nykaa and MakeMyTrip. Bonus points on e-vouchers carry on through ShopWise, now run as a separate platform, at each card's existing ShopWise rate and capped at 25,000 bonus points a month. Base earn and the value of a point don't change. It touches the Centurion, Platinum, Platinum Reserve, Platinum Travel and Gold. Amex has paused new applications in India, so this is for existing members.
Amex Platinum Travel: lounge visits depend on spend. From 1 October the Platinum Travel's two domestic lounge visits a quarter need ₹1 lakh of eligible spend in the quarter before. For October to December the bar is ₹70,000 across July to September. Spend that lands unevenly can cost you a whole quarter's visits, because it doesn't carry over.
Axis Select: a narrower milestone. The Select's ₹3 lakh anniversary milestone, which unlocks extra international lounge visits, golf rounds and the next year's Priority Pass, no longer counts spend on insurance, rent, fuel, education, utilities and telecom, wallet loads, gold and jewellery, government services or gift cards. If rent or bills made up a good share of your ₹3 lakh, plan for the bar being higher than it looks.

Fuel surcharge waiver cap cut from ₹150 to ₹100 a month
1% waiver, capped at ₹100 per statement month
From 1 October 2026 the Altura Plus's 1% fuel surcharge waiver (on fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000) is capped at ₹100 per statement month, down from ₹150, so the most it can save in a year falls from ₹1,800 to ₹1,200. AU announced it on the card's own page ("Effective 1st October 2026, Fuel Surcharge Waiver will be up to ₹100 per statement cycle") and moved the card into the ₹100 row of its MITC dated 30 September 2026.

From 1 October 2026 AU raised the Zenith's cross-currency markup from 1.99% to 3.49%, so an international spend now costs about 4.1% on top once GST is added. AU announced it on the card's own page ("Effective 1st October 2026, Forex Markup will be revised from 1.99% to 3.49% for your international transactions") and moved the card into its 3.49% group in the Key Fact Statement v1.9 and the MITC dated 30 September 2026; the July 2026 editions still listed it at 1.99%.

Domestic lounge visits now need ₹50,000 of spend in the quarter before
2 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits per quarter on a purchase-active card→2 visits per quarter, only after ₹50,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter
From 1 October 2026 the AU CA card's two complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a quarter follow the spend gate AU has applied to its other cards since 10 April 2026: they need net retail spend of ₹50,000 or more on the card in the previous calendar quarter, so the October to December visits depend on July to September spend. Until then a purchase-active card was enough. AU's airport lounge terms, issued on 30 September 2026, revise the condition "(for CA & CS from 1st Oct 2026)". The card is open only to Chartered Accountants.

Domestic lounge access gated behind ₹1L of spend in the previous quarter
2 complimentary domestic visits per calendar quarter, unconditional→2 per quarter only if ₹1,00,000 of eligible spend in the preceding calendar quarter
From 1 October 2026 the card's two complimentary domestic airport lounge visits per calendar quarter stop being unconditional: a member has to have spent ₹1 lakh or more in eligible transactions during the preceding calendar quarter to get them in the next one. Amex is easing the first quarter in — for October–December 2026 the bar is ₹70,000 of spend across July–September 2026 rather than ₹1 lakh. The allowance itself is unchanged at up to 8 visits a year; what changed is that lumpy spenders now lose whole quarters, since the ₹1 lakh has to land inside one quarter and does not carry over. A member pacing evenly toward the ₹4 lakh milestone clears the bar automatically; one who front-loads a year of spend does not.

Excluded categories stop counting toward the Rs 3 lakh milestone bar
All spend counted toward the Rs 3 lakh anniversary threshold→Nine excluded merchant categories no longer count toward it
The Select's Rs 3 lakh anniversary-year milestone — which unlocks 6 extra international lounge visits, 6 extra golf rounds and the following year's Priority Pass renewal — keeps its benefits and its threshold, but narrows what counts toward it. From 1 October 2026 spend in the categories that already earn no reward points stops contributing: insurance, rent, fuel, educational services, utilities and telecom, wallet loads, gold and jewellery, government services and gift cards. If a meaningful slice of your Rs 3 lakh came from rent or utilities, the bar is now materially harder than the headline number suggests.

Bonus points on e-vouchers continue through ShopWise, which Amex now runs as a separate platform, at the card's existing ShopWise rate and capped at 25,000 bonus points a month. Rules and bank news
Apple Pay launches in India, with Axis Bank cards first. Apple and Axis Bank launched Apple Pay in India on 30 September. If you have an Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card, you can add it to Apple Wallet through the Axis Mobile app or Wallet itself and pay in shops, in apps and online with an iPhone or Apple Watch, and Axis says your card's rewards and benefits carry on as usual (Apple, Axis). Apple names no other Indian bank yet, and Axis says payments roll out over the next few weeks.
Paying on foreign websites: a new check from 1 October. Under the RBI's 2025 directions on authenticating digital payments, card issuers had until 1 October to be able to verify a one-off online payment to an overseas merchant whenever the merchant or its bank asks, and to run a risk-based check on all such payments (RBI directions, paragraph 10). So an occasional purchase from a foreign website may now ask you for an extra approval, much like a domestic one. Keep your bank's app and your registered mobile number handy when you shop abroad online.
Club Vistara IDFC FIRST card: closed on 1 October. As our write-up for 14–20 September noted, the card stopped working for transactions on 1 October; Maharaja Points earned up to 30 September move to your Air India Maharaja Club account.
Coming up
- 26 October: most IDFC FIRST cards stop earning reward points on international spends.
- 31 October: last day of spends on Axis Bank's Vistara cards.
- 1 November: Axis movie offers need ₹25,000 of spend in the previous three months.
- 15 November: complimentary memberships on Axis's premium cards renew only if you opt in.

Shopping 10% needs more than ₹15,000 of spend in the statement cycle
50 Jewels per ₹100 on every eligible purchase→5 Jewels per ₹100 instantly; 45 more only if cycle spend tops ₹15,000
From 5 October 2026 the 10% shopping rate (50 Jewels per ₹100) at Amazon, Flipkart and Jupiter's other named brands is paid in two parts. 5 Jewels per ₹100 are credited on every purchase; the other 45 are added at the end of the statement cycle only if total qualifying spend in that cycle is more than ₹15,000, and are cancelled if it is not. In a lighter cycle the named brands therefore earn 1%, the same as everyday spend. The caps of 1,000 Jewels a transaction, 3,000 a merchant and 10,000 a cycle, the 25 Jewels per ₹100 on Jupiter Flights and everyday earning are unchanged. The two issuer-side documents disagree on the start date: CSB Bank's card terms date the new table from 5 October 2026 ("Applicable 05th October, 2026 onwards"), while Jupiter's own terms page gives 10 October ("Applicable till 09th October, 2026" for the old table). This record follows CSB, the issuer; a statement from the first days of October may still show the old rate.

From 1 November 2026 the MyZone buy-one-get-one movie offer at District is no longer unconditional — Axis requires ₹25,000 of spend in the previous three calendar months to qualify. The bar is waived for the month a card is issued plus the following three calendar months, but an upgrade between variants does not count as a new issuance. Only settled transactions count, and interest, fees, charges, reversals and refunds are excluded. From 1 November 2026 the card's movie benefit becomes spend-gated: you need Rs 25,000 of eligible spend in the previous three calendar months to qualify. A newly issued card is exempt for its issuance month plus the following three calendar months — but an upgrade between variants does not count as a new card. Only settled transactions count, settlement can lag the transaction by up to five working days, and interest, fees, charges, reversals and refunds are all excluded. EMI transactions count only at the monthly instalment billed, not the full purchase value.

Memberships renewed automatically each year→Renewed only with the cardholder's explicit consent
From 15 November 2026 the complimentary memberships attached to the card — the lifestyle, dining and travel programmes bundled with the annual fee — renew only if you actively consent. Axis says renewal details and consent options will be shared closer to each renewal date. Read it as a cost-control move: a benefit you have to remember to claim is a benefit fewer people claim, so if you value one of these memberships, watch for the consent prompt rather than assuming it rolls over.

Membership Rewards points kept separately for each card
One points balance across all your basic cards→A separate balance for each card; points cannot be moved between cards
From 15 November 2026, a member who holds two or more basic American Express cards has a separate Membership Rewards balance on each card, where today the points of all of them sit in one account. Existing points are split by the card that earned them, each card redeems from its own balance, and moving points from one card to another ends for good. Earn rates, redemption options and the value of a point do not change. A member who combined several cards' points to reach a bigger redemption now has to reach it on one card's balance.
▼ BenefitNew Account Cards no longer issued
New Account Cards available on request→No new Account Cards; existing ones keep working
From 15 November 2026 American Express stops issuing new Account Cards, the extra cards in a member's own name used to keep certain spends separate. Requests, including replacements for a lost, stolen or expired Account Card, are taken until 27 October, and an application started by then is completed by 3 November. An Account Card already issued keeps working.
◆ RewardPoints paused on a card still overdue at its next statement
No redemptions on any card while one is overdue→No earning or redemption on that card from its next statement until paid
From 15 November 2026, if a payment is still due when a card's next statement is generated, that card stops earning and redeeming Membership Rewards points from that statement date until the overdue balance is paid. Points already earned stay, and the member's other cards carry on, since each keeps its own balance. Amex's current Membership Rewards terms already forfeit the points of a statement left unpaid by the due date (reinstatable for a fee) and block redemptions on every card while any one is overdue; the new page does not say whether the forfeiture clause stays. Paying the overdue amount before the next statement date avoids the pause.
◆ MilestoneMilestone spend counted by posting date
Spend counted by purchase date→Spend counted by posting date; bonus by the end of that month
From 15 November 2026, spend towards a milestone counts on the date a transaction posts to the card rather than the date of the purchase, and the bonus points or voucher are credited by the end of the calendar month in which the milestone is reached. A purchase made on 30 November that posts in December counts towards December. Regular earning does not change, and bonuses already earned stay. A member aiming for a monthly milestone near the end of a month should allow a few days for purchases to post.
▼ FeeLate payment fee set on the total amount due
30% of the minimum amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,000→Slabs on the total amount due, ₹500 to ₹1,250
On statements generated after 15 November 2026, the late payment fee on American Express's credit cards is set by slabs of the total amount due, from ₹500 to ₹1,250, instead of 30% of the minimum amount due within ₹500 to ₹1,000. It is charged when nothing, or less than the minimum amount due, is paid by the due date. Amex says the change brings the fee in line with RBI requirements and refers members to its updated MITC, effective 15 November, for the slabs. Amex's charge cards are not affected.

From 15 November 2026 American Express withdraws the MRCC's 50% renewal-fee waiver, which halved the ₹4,500 (plus GST) renewal fee for a member who spent ₹90,000 to ₹1,49,999 in a card membership year. Amex's notice names only the 50% tier; the full waiver at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend, which its MRCC page lists, is not mentioned. A member spending between ₹90,000 and ₹1.5 lakh a year now pays the full fee.
